Re: Bougainville, Indonesia and PNG
Ron Howard -
Jan 03, 2017 15:51 UTC No.2029
BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 1119-1205*,
Jan 3. DJ in Pidgin/Tok Pisin playing pop songs; too weak to
be readable.
Today was a first for me here, hearing a formal, offical sign off
format. For a long time now NBC normally ended about 1200+ by
just suddenly going off the air (pulled the plug), but instead today
at 1203 noted children singing the National Anthem and announcer
in English with what sounded like station SA/ID and frequencies (heard
"kilohertz" mentioned several times); very tough copy; off at 1205*.
The other change today was that they did not go to the usual Port
Moresby audio feed about 1201, for the "NBC News in Brief." In
the past, Bougainville normally started the news, but rarely got all
the way through it before going off the air, but instead today they
did their own sign off format. So today was a major change in their
closing.
In the past, I often heard this sign off format of children singing the
National Anthem on both NBC Madang (3260) and NBC New
Ireland (3905), so was a real treat for me to hear it again, as it
had been over a year since I last heard it.
Today's propagation did not favor RRI Palangkaraya, which was
not a factor at all in hearing NBC.
My poor quality audio at http://goo.gl/xaP33v .
INDONESIA. 3325, Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya, 1212-1228, Jan 3.
Jakarta news relay already in progress, in Bahasa Indonesia;
ending the news at 1228 with patriotic song (too weak to ID song);
clearly // Pro 1 RRI Wamena (4869.88) till 1230. Unable to confirm
// to RRI Ternate, as only an open carrier on 3344.86.
PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1206-1207*, Jan 3.
Pop song till suddenly off. For a long time now, this has been their
closing format, to just pull the plug, with no formal sign off.

BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 1109-1201*, Jan 9.
Provincial news in Pidgin/Tok Pisin (item about "Department of
Education," etc.); DJ in Pidgin/Tok Pisin playing pop Pacific Islands
music; suddenly off without the recently heard formal sign off format;
unfortunately today's propagation favored both RRI Palangkaraya
and NBC, so they were mixing together for most of the time, with
NBC only slightly better at times.
CHINA. 6035, PBS Yunnan (Voice Shangri-la), Jan 8 running past
their normal sign off time of 1200*; at 1256 non-stop classical western
orchestra music; still on at 1303.
INDIA. 4896.0, AIR Kurseong, occasionally this off frequency anomaly
happens, as it did today (Jan 9), as noted at 1242; Dave Valko also noted
same about this time; normally, on most days, heard on 4895.0.
INDONESIA. 3325, Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya, 1109, Jan 9. Ending
the local news with usual patriotic song 釘agimu Negeri・(For You Our
Country); NBC Bougainville QRM, which was slightly stronger at times.
PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1202-1237*, Jan 9.
Running later than usual (normally off about 1206 or so); 1202-1206
NBC news in English; promo; DJ in English playing pop songs in
English; several on air phone conversations; mostly unreadable;
suddenly off in mid-song.

KOREA NORTH[non]. On Jan 11, on 6145, again heard the
same special Shiokaze programming as heard on Dec 29
and originally recorded Dec 10. Preempted regular Shiokaze
programming. 1331+ with nice segment of easy listening
orchestra music ("Moon River," etc.). I suppose we should
be thankful to N. Korea for not jamming this entertaining
show.
KOREA SOUTH. 9100, Echo of Hope - VOH, briefly heard
at 1403, Jan 11, Very surprised to find them on the air at this
time, as their schedule is supposedly 1800-2400 on this
frequency. Once it was heard (not jammed), went to check
for //; yes, definitely // 4885, which was well heard as usual
and not jammed, while // 3985 // 6003 and // 6348 were all
jammed; news in Korean; when I tuned back to 9100 at 1405,
found they had already gone off the air. A brief test of some
type? Thinking of expanding their schedule?

MALAYSIA. 9835, Sarawak FM, via Kajang, 1537, Jan 12.
Chief Minister of Sarawak (Tan Sri Adenan Satem) passed
away yesterday; there will be seven days of mourning and
flags will be at half-mast, for this popular leader.
Heard mostly non-stop reciting from the Qur'an, with brief SA/IDs;
noted a recital by a woman, which is extremely rare, so I knew
something very unique was going on; certainly these recitals
are in honor of the late leader; still heard at 1629, with good
reception.
No other Malaysian stations were heard today, which has been
the case recently; no Asyik FM (6050) and no Wai FM (11665).

program "Focus on China"; long item about winter fishing festival
in NE China; a break to play pop song ("Faded - Where Are You

Strait Broadcast Station"; fair.
INDIA. 4894.9, AIR Kurseong, 1531, Jan 14. Seemed to be
on low side of their normal 4895.0; New Delhi audio feed of the
news in English
// 4760 AIR Port Blair (ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS).
// 4910 AIR Jaipur.
// 4920 AIR Chennai, almost fair with QRM (TIBET - PBS Xizang).

// 5010 AIR Thiruvananthapuram.

// 5050 AIR Aizawl, QRM from Guangxi Beibu Bay Radio (CHINA).
// 9380 AIR Aligarh.
5050, AIR Aizawl, 1230, Jan 14. Amazing propagation that
completely blocked out Guangxi Beibu Bay Radio (CHINA)
which normally dominates this frequency; also a rare day
with strong signal from Aizawl; news in English; mostly
readable. Daily I check here, but have never heard
anything like today's reception. Audio from today at
http://goo.gl/ry8d9E . China did indeed fade up here a
little later.
1612-1630*; after China signed off, subcontinent music program
"produced by AIR Shillong," in English; SA/ID 典his came to you from
the North Eastern Service of All India Radio broadcasting from
Shillong"; local Aizawl SA/ID and frequency at sign off.
INDONESIA. 3325, Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya, 1402, Jan 14. Local
news in Bahasa Indonesia; unusually strong signal, but QRN (static)
sounded more like summertime QRN (heavy); 1416 ending news with
the normally played patriotic song ("Bagimu Negeri"); very unique
propagation today strongly favoring RRI & AIR stations.
3344.85, RRI Ternate, 1505*, Jan 14. Off with the usual "Pulau Ambon"
(Island of Ambon)/"Love Ambon"; better than average reception.
MALAYSIA. 9835, Sarawak FM, via Kajang, 1212, Jan 14. Continuing
with mostly Qur'an recitals in honor of the late Chief Minister of
Sarawak; 1300 & 1400 breaks for 10 minutes of news in vernacular;
still on at last check at 1548, still with Qur'an recitals.
Still no other Malaysian stations were heard today, which has been the
case recently; no Asyik FM (6050) and no Wai FM (11665).
TAJIKISTAN. 4790, BBC Uzbek, 1316, Jan 14. Mixing badly with the
jamming by CNR1 (// 6125); schedule 1300-1330.

ANGOLA. 4949.74, R. Nacional de Angola. Bill Bingham
(RSA) and I have recently reported their absence. At 0146,
through subsequent checking till 0503, on Jan 18, found
them still silent, with no hint of a carrier.
Update from Bill - Angola back on the air, at 1745, on Jan 18.
Good news!
BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 1134-1202*, Jan 17.
DJ in Pidgin/Tok Pisin played EZL pop songs in English; 1201 start
of the NBC news in English; suddenly off. So today they did not
use their formal sign off format, but went back to business as
usual. RRI Palangkaraya not propagating, so no QRM.
CHINA. 6230, CNR1 jamming, 1231, Jan 17. There was a time
in the past when the PRC jammed almost all of Sound of Hope
programs, on a continual basis, but that is no longer the case.
Now it almost seems rare for them to bother to jam SOH. I daily
check this frequency and it is indeed very rare to hear SOH
jammed here, as it was today, with a very strong signal. Of
course also blocking VMW (Australia Weather West) also on
frequency here. Jan 18, back to normal, with no jamming of SOH.
RUSSIA. 7345 // 7295, Radio Sakha, via Yakutsk, at 0349, on
Jan 18, with sound of horses neighing, sound of galloping horses
and some Jew's harp (khomus) music; usual SA/ID at 0350, followed
by series of ads.
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020. Am no longer hearing any extended
broadcasts here (as of Jan 18), as I had noted late last year;
have been checking many days about 1230, but this year seems
no extended programming past 1200.
9545, SIBC, Jan 18, at 0438; DJ in Pijin playing pop songs and asking
a series of questions; "What is 60% of 300?"; read out list of people
who answered correctly; 0500 ABC news (RA: // 15240 [good] // 15415
[poor] // 17840 [very good]); SIBC suddenly off at 0501*, with RA
continuing.
Maybe after this month, this will be the only place to hear ABC news
on SW?
UNID. 3210-USB, on Jan 18, heard 1253-1256*. Daily I check here for
the return of the low powered Australian; a first for me today was to hear
Russian; thanks very much to Mauno Ritola, for listening to my audio clip
and confirming - "yes, it is Russian, sounds like they are swearing quite a
bit, maybe about the one that got away ;-) "; as always, I very much
appreciate his assistance!

Hi Wolfie,
Could it be that Myanmar's exact frequency transmitter (5985.00)
is having problems now, as you noted them off the air on Jan 20?
Could they have reactivated the old mothballed off frequency
transmitter, to fill in while they repair the 5985.00 transmitter?
Just speculating!
Jan 21, heard on about 5985.15, at 1441, in vernacular with on air
phone chat; seemed not nearly as strong as the exact frequency
transmitter; by 1541, very weak signal. Needs more monitoring
to determine what is happening here.
Thanks, Wolfie, for your alert that something different was going
on!

Jan 24, heard SIBC, the Voice of the Nation, with extended
schedule on 9545; 0500-0530 with ABC news & sports,
followed by RA's "Pacific Beat," with Bruce Hill (info about
2019 referendum to determine Bougainville's independence,
etc.); // RA on 15240, 15415 and 17840; at 0530 no longer //,
went to their own programs; DJ in Pijin playing pop songs
(Tina Turner with "I Don't Wanna Fight," etc.); series of
commercial announcements in English ("Back to school . . .
Telekom," etc.); several "SIBC, the Voice of the Nation" SA/IDs;
after one hour of listening, finally came up to mostly fair
reception; still on the air when tuned out at 0615. So this

MALAYSIA. 6050, Asyik FM, via Kajang, 1452-1500, Jan 24.
With the usual Tuesday "Bollywood" show of pop songs in Hindi.
Had been off the air for a while.
At 1500, the start of Salam FM, till 1502*, Jan 24. Time pips
(1+1 and mixing with time pips of PBS Xizang [TIBET]); brief SA/ID
("Salam FM"); choral NA (Negaraku ・Lagu Kebangsaan Malaysia);
Islamic programming in vernacular; suddenly off, leaving TIBET
in the clear, with decent reception.
BTW - Now all the SW Malaysian stations are active; 9835 Sarawak
FM and also Wai FM on 11665. Has been a while since all three were
broadcasting at the same time.
SOMALILAND. 7120, R. Hargeisa, 1510, Jan 24. Call-to-prayer
for the Islamic Maghrib prayer, just after sunset; their sunset today
was at 1506 UT (6:06 PM at Hargeisa), while my sunrise was at
1515 UT, so good greyline reception.
SUDAN. 9505, Voice of Africa, *1605, Jan 24. My three receptions
here have all been with different sign on times; today on with carrier
at decent level, but no audio; totally unlike yesterdays reception that
had good audio level for their clear French programming; today by
1621 had the impression there was some very faint audio, but so far
down within the open carrier that I could not guess at the language.
TAIWAN. 9100, Sound of Hope, 1445, Jan 24. Poor; not jammed;
// SOH on 6230 (also unjammed); in Chinese; clearly not Echo of
Hope - VOH, as it was not in Korean and not // 4885. As Glenn has
been pointing out recently in DXLD yg, we have to be careful as to
which station is being heard.

Have not checked on JG2XA for a long time, but Jan 25 could
not help but notice that one of their frequencies was clearly off
the air, that was 5006. At 1412 was in fact hearing CW on 8006,
but 5006 had no signal at all.
Last year I consistently heard a format of CW during a portion of
every minute, but not so today. Now there are many minutes (5?)
between their CW transmissions, with just an open carrier (dead
air) between the CW. A major change.

JG2XA transmits continuously with 200 W on 5006 kHz and 8006 kHz. The
station ID is normally transmitted every 5 minutes by amplitude
modulation of the carrier in morse code with the callsign JG2XA and
its objective "UEC HFD STATION". The type of radio signal is H2A

I am very sad. Broadcasting in the south will decrease steadily.

KOREA SOUTH. 5857.5, HLL2 Seoul. Thanks to Walt
Salmaniw, for the reminder about this station that I hear
daily, but rarely think to report on. Good signal, but audio
somewhat distorted.
Jan 31, at 1312, in English, with weather conditions at different
observatories around the country; providing wind direction, wind
speed in meters per second, air pressure in hectopascals and
temperature in Celsius; they have other segments in other
languages.
THAILAND. 8743-USB, Bangkok Meteorological Radio, 1341,
Jan 31. In English; marine weather for shipping; ending with their
address: "Telecommunication and Information Technology Bureau,
4353 Sukhumvit Road, Bangna District, Bangkok, Thailand 10260";
1342 played their IS; most days have fair reception; they have other
segments in other languages.
VIETNAM. 7906-USB // 8294-USB, Ho Chi Minh Radio Coast
Station, *1305-1310*, Jan 31. Starts and ends with the usual tones;
in Vietnamese; starts with ID and then marine conditions; both fair.
Has been a considerable amount of time since I last heard their
distress announcements in English, so assume there have been
no marine emergencies recently. Ho Chi Minh Radio is the most
powerful coastal station, so is usually well heard. Operated by
VISHIPEL (Vietnam Maritime Communications and Electronics
LLC).

PHILIPPINES. 15640 // 17700 // 17820, R. Pilipinas. Recently
these frequencies have had very poor reception (unusable), but
Feb 2, had excellent reception; close to 100% readable; 0235-0252;
programs heard - "DFA Online, news and events from different
Philippine embassies and consulates around the world," "Songs
and music from ASEAN," "Philippine Trivia," "It's More Fun in the
Philippines," etc.; promo for PBS, "70 years of broadcasting";
countless SA/IDs.
In my opinion, this station provides some of the best programming
on SW. Almost everything they broadcast deals locally with the
Philippines, which I find very entertaining. My four minute recording
of this exceptional broadcast is at http://goo.gl/mo3Qsr .

Ron Howard -
Feb 18, 2017 23:19 UTC No.2142
AUSTRALIA. 3210, test of Unique Radio on Feb 18, at 1300,
seemed that I was hearing a JBA open carrier that was not there
minutes earlier; well below threshold level; totally unusable;
subsequent checking through 1450 had extreme challenge to
even tell for sure if the open carrier was still there or not. My
conclusion is that this will probably be mostly unusable for us
in the States.
Seemed today was not an issue with propagation, as most days
Korea, on 3219.9 (5 kW), is just an open carrier, but today had
definite singing at 1451, so generally good propagation and
Korea on 3320 (100 kW) had the usual good reception.
CHINA. 4900, VOS (Minnan language service), still remains
here on Feb 18, at 1456, with fair reception. Hard to tell if this will
turn out to be just a temporary move from ex: 6115?
4940, Voice of Strait, 1500-1530, Feb 18. Saturday only English
program "Focus on China"; a filler (anomaly) program; not their
standard news format at all; audio from the CCTV documentary
"A Bite of China," segment "Inspiration for Change," about making
tofu, rice wine and soy sauce; one continuous announcer (native
speaker of English); no breaks for IDs; 1530 SA/ID in English - "This
is the Voice of Taiwan Strait News Radio"; mostly readable.
Believe some of the VOS staff must still be out on holiday, or would
assume they would have had their normal Saturday news format.
4990, PBS Hunan, 1402, Feb 17. Better than normal reception; "ni
hao," the standard Chinese phone greeting; many on air calls.
9575, CNR1 echo jamming of AIR, via Bengaluru, in Tibetan; Feb 17,
at 1247; scheduled 1215-1330.
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio, 1538, Feb 18. Segment in
English; "the weather" (outlook for the next two days); "End of the
news from Myanmar Radio"; 1540-1555 with the Saturday program
天oice of ASEAN, Beyond Boundaries"; seemed to be produced by
PBS (Philippines), as the announcer was Edward Santos, who I have
heard many times over Radio Pilipinas, talking about relationships
between Malaysia and the Philippines; 1556 "Welcome to our program,
ASEAN News"; item about Cambodia, etc.; covered at 1600 by China
(CRI); mostly readable.
It will be recalled that Myanmar and the Philippines signed a Memo of
Understanding (http://210.5.104.56/treaty/scanneddocs/616.pdf).
BTW - 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of
ASEAN.
SIKKIM. 4835, AIR Gangtok, 1457-1515, Feb 17. Nicely above
threshold level audio; at most times able to make out the language
used; 1457-1512 alternating announcers in Hindi; 1512 the usual
tone to start the New Delhi audio feed, with commercial announcements
in Hindi, till news in Hindi at 1515. Certainly one of their better days.
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, SIBC. In Dec, noted many days with
extended broadcasting post-1200*, but in Jan, did not hear any and
now in Feb am again hearing some, but certainly not on a daily basis.
Feb 18, tuned in at 1303 to hear SIBC with extended airing of non-stop
pop songs ("My Boyfriend's Back," etc.); no SA/IDs heard, so clearly not a
Wantok FM relay; 1314 audio ended and went to dead air (open carrier),
which was still on at 1608. Very unfortunate that they ended the audio
early, while still keeping the transmitter on for many hours after that. Why
not just keep the audio going?
ZAMBIA. 5915, R. One/ZNBC, 1603, Feb 18. Via long path; mixing with
Myanmar(?); China (CRI) had already signed off; in vernacular; at times
almost fair.

SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, Wantok FM relay via SIBC, 1404-1448
& 1517-1537 and still on at 1550, Feb 19; being as it's Sunday, heard
with all contemporary worship songs in English (song "Broken Vessels -
Amazing Grace", etc.); only very brief SA/IDs - "Wantok FM 96.3. Good
times, great music" and "The hottest sounds . . . with the hottest DJs,
96.3"; mostly fair.
They must have read my comments yesterday - "Very unfortunate that
they ended the audio early, while still keeping the transmitter on for
many hours after that. Why not just keep the audio going?" Yes, was
very nice today to have audio! My recording of SA/ID and "Broken Vessels -
Amazing Grace" at http://goo.gl/UJmXHd .

to SWL - http://goo.gl/qPnFNv . Ron
BANGLADESH. 4750, Bangladesh Betar - HS, on Feb 21; well
above the norm; propagation favoring BB and not CNR1; 1251-1253
SA/ID and daily "weather forecast" in English; high today 31.2ーC, sunrise
at 6:27 AM and sunset at 5:56 PM.
INDIA. 6030, AIR Delhi (Kingsway - 250 kW), 1311, Feb 21. Unique
propagation here at this time preiod, as normally would have CNR1
mixing with Calgary (CFVP), not AIR; subcontinent music and
announcer in Hindi; underneath China.
SIKKIM. 4835, AIR Gangtok, on Feb 21, with unusually good
propagation; the best reception I have had here since ABC went
silent; 1508 with subcontinent music; 1512 switch over to audio feed
from New Delhi, starting with tone; singing ads in Hindi; 1515 tone
before news in Hindi. My audio at http://goo.gl/BDcirm .
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, Wantok FM relay, via SIBC. Yes, Feb 21,
with yet another day of a long, extended broadcast; 1244, till past 1518;
strong signal during unique propagation; good reception at times; pop
songs (Bette Midler - "From a Distance [God Is Watching Us]," etc.);
short SA/IDs - "Listen non-stop, non-stop, 96.3," "This is Wantok FM 96.3.
Good times, great music" and "Listen to the hottest sounds . . . with the
hottest DJs, 96.3."
TAJIKISTAN. 4790, BBC Uzbek, 1302 and 1330* (almost 1331), Feb 21.
Poor, but about the best reception I have had here; good propagation, but
the usual heavy CODAR QRM; CNR1 jamming extremely faint; a long radio
drama; 1330 BBC SA/ID and pips. Not often I can actually make out the SA/ID.

INDONESIA. 4869.9, Pro 1 RRI Wamena, as it's Thursday (Feb 23),
time to check for "Kang Guru Indonesia." Yes, at 1239 the first "KGI" ID
and intro in Bahasa Indonesia, then on to English; KGI is "carried on
over 200 stations"; played a few pop songs; segment about rhyming
words; "Find a word that rhymes with soldier? . . . shoulder"; segment
"Good neighbors make good friends," about the importance of using
"Thank you and please" in Australia & Indonesia; about "cultural
differences"; better reception than usual, but still less than semi-
readable.
BTW - RRI Ternate (3344.87) not hear on Feb 23.
KOREA NORTH[non]. 5935, Shiokaze/Sea Breeze via Yamata (Japan),
1330, with Thursday (Feb 23) English. Intro to the repeated half hour show
that just aired; N. Korean jamming; both totally blocking reception of Tibet
(PBS Xizang).
KOREA SOUTH. 4885, Echo of Hope - VOH, 1415, Feb 23. Daily
heard with good reception and never jammed by N. Korea, as their
other frequencies are; as usual at 15 minutes after the hour, strong
"V O H" SA/ID.
6135, Voice of Freedom (clandestine). Normally blocked by strong white
noise jamming from N. Korea, but Feb 23, found VOF cutting through
the jamming fairly well at 1349, with a radio drama in Korean; so todays
propagation favored the south rather than the north. BTW - the KBS
station on 6015, was also well heard through the white noise jamming.
MALAYSIA. 6050, Salam FM, 1503, Feb 22. Islamic programming
(reciting from the Qur'an, etc.); in vernacular; many singing IDs; 1518
SA/ID with "shortwave" and "FM" frequencies; still on the air at 1524; fair-
good, with light QRM from Tibet.
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio, on Feb 22 (Wednesday), at
1545, with "VOA American Stories, Learning English," with a dramatic
presentation of the story 鄭 Princess of Mars,・by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Transcript and audio streaming at http://goo.gl/nxM1DU .
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, Wantok FM relay, via SIBC, 1309, Feb 23.
Yet another day of extended broadcasting (now daily?); non-stop songs
(Lionel Richie - "Stuck on you," Men At Work - "Who can it be now?," etc.);
frequent brief SA/IDs; not as strong as yesterday; still on at 1410. Yesterday,
Yoshiyuki Ohashi (formerly active in SWL as "Peace-J") was also hearing
this at 1321, with nice reception in Japan.
Wantok FM 96.3, was established in 1999, as a part of SIBC, to attract a
younger audience - http://goo.gl/TLliig .
USA. 7505v, WRNO, 0424, Thursday (Feb 23). In Chinese, with "Praise
for Today," already in progress; poor-fair.
ZAMBIA. 5915, ZNBC/Radio One, 0458, Feb 23. In English; promo
for the "Zambia Bureau of Standards"; music & call of fish eagle; "One
Zambia, one nation"; news & sports ("Bank of Zambia projects a 3.9%
economic growth rate this year," etc.); 0515 weather and repeat promo
for the "Zambia Bureau of Standards"; 0517 into vernacular; no "load
shedding" today, unlike yesterdays closing down at sunrise.
ZANZIBAR. 6015, ZBC Radio, 0340, Feb 23. Normal format at this time;
brief chanting and mention of "Zanzibar"; almost fair; better than usual.

CHINA. 5979, Gannan PBS, 1344, Feb 27. In Chinese; ex: 5970

CONGO. 6115, Radio Congo (presumed), 0515-0518*, Feb 27.
Clearly hearing announcers in French underneath strong Japan
(SA/IDing as "RN2, Radio Nikkei"), but after 0518 certainly not on
the air through checking to 0545. Brazzaville local sunrise at
0505 UT. Seemed strange to me that they went off the air about
their sunrise. Perhaps I have been checking for them too late,
when I was looking closer to 0600 UT?
EQUATORIAL GUINEA. 5005.0, RNGE, R. Bata (presumed),
on Feb 27, noted decent open carrier at 0522 and subsequent
checking; never made out any audio; decent level OC past 0546.
No, do not believe it was Madagascar.
INDIA. 4870.27, AIR (Delhi-Kingsway), at 1357, on Feb 27, with
subcontinent music/singing; scheduled to be in Nepali; best in USB
to get away from RRI Wamena on the low side.
4970, AIR Shillong, 1506, Feb 26 (Sunday), with Christian songs;
1510 local SA/ID and news headlines in English; "please stand by for
the news"; 1512 start of the New Delhi audio feed.
Shillong is a hill station in northeast India and capital of the state
of Meghalaya. Christianity is the dominant religion there. In fact
Christianity is the major religion in three northeastern states
(Nagaland, Mizoram, and Meghalaya).
INDONESIA. 3344.86, RRI Ternate, 1445-1504*, Feb 27. Off
with the usual "Pulau Ambon" (Island of Ambon)/"Love Ambon."
MALAYSIA. 6050, Salam FM, 1505 till past 1518, Feb 27. Strong
signal, with good reception; in vernacular; many SA/IDs.
11665, Wai FM, with the Sunday (Feb 26) "Country and Western"
show; at 1534 with American C&W songs (Kenny Rogers - "The
Gambler," etc.); DJ in vernacular giving title to songs; good
reception.
PHILIPPINES. 17820, R. Pilipinas, 0231-0241, Feb 26. Only this
frequency very readable; // 15640 // 17700 not so readable. News
about the activities of the president and of tourism in the Philippines;
擢rom the presidential palace Manila, Dateline Malacang,・which
of course is the name of the presidential palace.
RUSSIA. 7345 // 7295, Radio Sakha, via Yakutsk. Feb 26 (Sunday)
noted at 0246, with their weekend schedule (0000-0500), as opposed
to the weekday schedule 0300-0500; pop songs; 0250 usual SA/ID and ads;
covered at *0258 by strong RRI sign on (IS), which is often not so strong
as today.
7345 // 7295, on Feb 27 (Monday), 0450-0500*; usual SA/ID and ads; music;
0500 IS (Jew's harp - khomus) and 3 pips; 7295 with much better reception
than normal, with 7345 still stronger.
SOMALILAND. 7120, R. Hargeisa, 1517, Feb 27. Call-to-prayer for the
Islamic Maghrib prayer, just after sunset; their sunset today was at 1514
UT (6:14 PM at Hargeisa), while my sunrise was at 1440 UT.
ZAMBIA. 5915, ZNBC/Radio One, 0500, Feb 27. In English with news,
sports, weather and government promo ending at 0512 and into vernacular.

Hello! Ron-san and Hiroyuki-san.
How are you today?
I'm feeling good because I just had a really good lunch in the morning after my grave-yard shift.
To Ron-san.
Regarding your audio KBS Hanminjok Bangsong on 6015 kHz from California, that sounds good! and nice catch & timing of not jammed!
The photograph of rainbow at Asilomar State Beach is very beautiful, too!
0700UTC time pips is 1600KST(JST) time pips. (4pm afternoon)
KST is Shoth Korean Standard Time, and it's same as Japanese Standard Time(JST).
I was able to confirm that SA/IDs in your audio.
The SA/IDs of Korean language is "KBS Hanminjok Bangsong e nyuseu ip nida." by male voice after the time pips.
This Korean language mean "This is KBS Hanminjok Bangsong's news."

important document," "record of employment," "Bougainville Board
of Education"; 1126 PSA about the upcoming elections in June;
back to DJ with pop Pacific Islands songs till suddenly off in
mid-song, so they did not make it through to their normal 1200*;
better than semi-readable.
Only very light QRM from RRI Palangkaraya, which at 1113 played
the distinctive patriotic song 釘agimu Negeri・(For You Our Country),
but was far underneath NBC.
Seeing as PNG will be holding national and local government
elections this coming June, we can expect many more PSAs
and more info about the elections.
CHINA. March 9, a day with Voice of Strait anomalies. Timeline:
1212 - both 4900 (Minnan language service) and 4940 ("Voice of Taiwan
Strait News Radio") off the air. In the past, both had *1200 sign on times.
1248 - noted 6115 on the air (Minnan language service).
*1248-1249* - happened to briefly hear 4940 come on the air and go off.
1314 - found 6115 silent. So is the switch from 6115 to 4900 happening
now at 1300, instead of formerly at 1200?
1315 - heard both 4900 and 4940; both with strong OTH radar QRM.
5979, Gannan PBS, 1318, March 9. Sounded like Chinese and played
some EZL music; between 1401 and 1408, they went off the air.
7385, Firedragon (music jamming) & CNR1 jamming, 1413, March 9,
which were to block RTI.
INDONESIA. 9524.96, VOI, 1311, March 9. Very poor reception, but
was able to make out the start of "Today in History," during their English
segment; better reception after 1402, in Indonesian.
PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1149-1206*, March 9.
In Pidgin/Tok Pisin; pop songs (Dr Hook - "Sharing the Night Together,"
etc.); 1200 PNG bird call and NBC news/weather in English (Australian
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop gave an address at Lae School of Nursing,
etc.); promo for NBC; suddenly off; poor, but at times semi-readable.
SOLOMON ISLANDS[non-log]. 5020, SIBC, on March 9, noted at 1207,
that there was no extended broadcast today, through subsequent
checking till 1425.

Hi Glenn,
During my March 7 reception on 6015 (KBS Hanminjok Bangsong),
heard a phone report between a man and woman (00:21+ on my
audio), at 0714 UT. Thanks to input from Chulsu-san (Korean DXer),
via Amano-san and Hiroyuki-san, have learned the following about
that phone report:
"After 25 seconds [into my audio - Ron], female announcer says 'jayu
asia bangsong'. 'jayu asia bangsong' is Radio Free Asia (RFA).
After 29 seconds, female announcer says 'seoul jiguk gija'.
'seoul jiguk gija' is Seoul branch reporter.
After 31 seconds, female announcer says 'annyeong ha seyo'.
'annyeong ha seyo' is hello.
After 40 seconds, it is RFA Seoul branch reporter phone report.
He is male. He explained the fact that the US Trump regime began
full-fledged discussions on North Korea policy.
*KBS Hanminjok Bangsong has a cooperative relationship with UBS
National Unification Broadcast (formerly RFC), as well as RFA Korean
broadcasting."
So very nice to receive such detailed analysis of my audio. Greatly
appreciate their kind assistance!

Hi Glenn,
Very much appreciate the following feedback from "Amano," with
excellent details of the SA/ID I recorded for KBS Hanminjok Bangsong.
Ron
"Hello! Ron-san . . . Regarding your audio KBS Hanminjok Bangsong,
on 6015 kHz from California, that sounds good! and nice catch &
timing of not jammed! . . .
0700 UTC time pips is 1600 KST(JST) time pips. (4 pm afternoon). KST
is South Korean Standard Time, and it's same as Japanese Standard
Time (JST).
I was able to confirm that SA/ID in your audio. The SA/ID of Korean
language is 'KBS Hanminjok Bangsong e nyuseu ip nida.' by male
voice after the time pips. This Korean language mean 'This is KBS
Hanminjok Bangsong's news.' "

Thank you for reporting to DXLDyg, Ron-san.
6015 kHz cannot hear KBS Hanminjok Bangsong even in Japan hear because of influence of North Korean jamming.
This time it was a catch of nice timing from California!!!
Incidentally, with the medium wave of 972 kHz, there is no jamming from North Korea and you can listen KBS Hanminjok Bangsong clearly at night in Japan.
Postscript :
California is a beautiful city.
The rainbow of Asilomar State Beach in California was very beautiful too.

Hope this was a one day only event!
BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, cut off at 1201*,

just after the time pips, so they were off the air during pips; fair.
Believe must be the same for VOS on 9505 moving to 4940,
now at 1300 (ex: 1200).
5050, "Guangxi Beibu Bay Radio," 1400, March 12. Pips;

fair. During the winter, this normally was below threshold level, but am

PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1207-1210*, March 19.
Seeing as it's Sunday, was checking for the usual "Island Praise"
show presented by Stacy Rose, with her syndicated (USA) show,
with pop Caribbean gospel music (reggae, soca, calypso, hip hop
gospel, etc.) and yes, it started at 1207 (somewhat later than usual),

1207, NBC with their usual local programming,
PHILIPPINES. 15640 // 17700 // 17820, R. Pilipinas, 0318-0329*.
March 19. Talk about President Duterte wanting country to change

I have heard this callsign used in an SA/ID); choral National Anthem;
tones and off. Most days now am having decent reception on all
frequencies, so a nice change in propagation.
SIKKIM. 4835, AIR Gangtok, 1227-1235, March 19. One of their
best days; recently had unusable signals, but today nicely above
threshold level audio; subcontinent singing/chanting; 1230 news in

SOLOMON ISLANDS. 9545, SIBC (presumed), 0501*, March 19.

HOA music/singing; clear of any jamming till *1505 start of

any usable reception; formerly the jamming always started
here about *1500-1501.
Last heard VOBME 2, on 7180 kHz., in late Dec. 2016.

KOREA NORTH[non]. 6040, Shiokaze/Sea Breeze, via Yamata,
continues to be free of N. Korea jamming on this new frequency,
on March 27, at 1331; scheduled 1300-1400.
6090, Shiokaze/Sea Breeze, on March 27, at 1406. In Japanese
with the usual segment "A message from the Japanese Government";
into what I assume was the programming of "Furusato No Kaze"
("Wind of Hometown") program (per Hiroshi), still in Japanese;
fair-good with no jamming, but faint CNR2 QRM far underneath.
SIKKIM[non-log]. 4835, AIR Gangtok. March 27, had my local
sunrise at 1400 UT. Gangtok was unheard, not even a faint carrier,
at 1357, nor later at 1506, on March 27. Unusual for them to be
off the air!
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, SIBC format of extended program of
non-stop pop songs (The Angels - "My Boyfriend's Back," etc.), on
March 27, from 1333 till still there at 1505; started out fair, but slowly
went downhill; no SA/IDs or any announcements, so clearly unlike the
Wantok FM relay heard yesterday.

ERITREA. 7175, VOBME 2 (presumed), on March 28, from 1414
to 1500, heard with only open carrier; audio seemed to start at 1500;
HOA music till again hit at *1502 with the start of strong white noise
(or DRM?) jamming, blocking reception. Again nothing heard around
their other frequency of 7146.
INDONESIA. 9524.96, VOI, 1307, March 28. Surprisingly semi-
readable; end of "Commentary"; "Today in History" (2005 had 8.6
quake; 1979 had nuclear accident at Three Mile Island; 1999 had
146 killed in the Kosovo War); into "Focus." Not often that this is
heard so well.
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio, 1319-1322, March 28. Special
live coverage of the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Asian Cup
qualification soccer match; in vernacular; Myanmar vs India, being
held in Yangon; usual background sounds for such an event (crowd
cheering, loudspeaker, etc.); preempted regular programming; fair.
PHILIPPINES[non-log]. 15640 // 17700 // 17820, R. Pilipinas.
Recently had been hearing them daily with decent reception 0200+,
but March 28 they were off the air; none of their frequencies heard
with any trace of a carrier. Do not believe it was poor propagation.
Probably power outage, due to Manila now having very high
temperatures.
ROMANIA. 6180, RRI, 0456*, March 28. Looking for Brazil (still
off the air), but instead heard this with their new schedule (0400-
0456); fairly strong, so when Brazil returns, this frequency will be
a mess for an hour.
SIKKIM[non-log]. 4835, AIR Gangtok. March 28, continues off
the air; also confirmed silent today by Mauno Ritola.
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, SIBC, 1146-1201, March 28. DJ in
Pijin reading many texted messages; pop songs; 1155 "Welcome
to our Evening Devotional"; "closing down" SA/ID & NA; much better
reception than normal.
1201, seamless change from SIBC programming over to the extended
broadcast of Wantok FM 96.3 relay of non-stop pop songs (Eagles -
"One of These Nights," Fleetwood Mac - "Landslide," etc.); frequent
SA/IDs ("Listen to the hottest sounds . . . with the hottest DJs, 96.3," "This
is Wantok FM 96.3. Good times, great music," etc.) and still heard at
1511+.
USA[non-log]. 7505v, WRNO was still silent 0244+, on March 28.

INDONESIA. 9524.96, VOI, 1302, March 29. Even better

Indonesia; questions to the quiz (1. What is the tagline of
Indonesian Tourism? 2. What is your favorite segment in
Voice of Indonesia? 3. Tell us briefly why you want to visit

Hello! Ron-san,
I'm sorry for taking rather a while to reply to it.
Could you please forward this Answer for information on to Mauno-san?
Answer from Chulsu-san (Republic Korea):
Mr.Mauno and Mr.Ron, Thanks for your question.
I can hear bubble jamming in Seoul at 1584 kHz.
Meanwhile, the Chinese broadcasting station was also heard.
The following link is the received audio in Seoul.
Please listen to it.
2017/03/28 2309KST(1409UTC) MW 1584kHz Recevied in Seoul, Korea
http://k003.kiwi6.com/hotlink/3bckb0sedc/170328tue2309_Seoul_1584kHz.mp3
(03min15sec - 03min26sec 1575kHz, 03min29sec - 03min48sec 1593kHz)
I also recorded frequencies around 1584 kHz.
You can hear Chinese stations with 3 frequencies.
This is my personal opinion.
I certainly feel that North Korea is sending jamming waves at 1584 kHz.
But, there are few broadcasting stations targeted by North Korea to transmit jamming waves at 1584 kHz.
This frequency is used from South Korea is "KBS-1 Daejeon, Geumsan Relay Station" and "KBS-1 Jinju, Suncheong Relay Station" are two broadcasting stations.
Both broadcasters are 1 kW broadcasters, small power.
I think that North Korea is not sending jamming waves to these two stations.
Currently I think that it is difficult to identify where jamming is being sent from, and what the purpose is.
Best regards,
Chulsu

ERITREA[non-log]. 7175, VOBME 2, on March 31, checking
from 1425 to past 1502+; looking for an open carrier or any audio,
but none heard; this was confirmed by the absence of any of the
usual white noise jamming, that recently had consistently been
starting at *1502, that is whenever VOBME was on the air. I
scanned this area 1502+ looking for any white noise jamming
(7146, 7175, 7180, 7185, etc.), but didn't hear any, so clearly
VOBME was off the air today.

CHINA. 5979, Gannan PBS, 1319, April 1. Has been close
to four months now since they moved from ex 5970 to this unique
frequency. It was Dec 3 that Hiroyuki Komatsubara (Japan) first
noted the change. Heard today in Chinese, with a weak signal.
SIKKIM. 4835, AIR Gangtok. After being silent for some days,
heard their open carrier on April 1, at 1256; another day of OTH
radar strong QRM, but the carrier was strong enough to cut through
it.
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, Wantok FM relay, via SIBC, 1232,
April 1. Another day with an extended broadcast; non-stop pop
songs, with brief Wantok SA/IDs; still on at 1350, but gone by 1409.
SOMALILAND. 7120, R. Hargeisa, 1326-1340, April 1. Definitely
in English; only able to make out a word here and there; seemed
news till 1331; went to non-HOA pop music; 1340 the usual HOA
theme music to end this 20 minute English segment. My local
sunrise was at 1353 UTC.
VANUATU. 7259.96, R. Vanuatu. April 1, with much better than
normal reception; various amounts of QRM (hams, etc.).
Highlights:
1139-1155: Interview in vernacular; few words in English
("employment information").
1155-1158: Indigenous pop song.
1158-1203: Preaching (Christian) in vernacular.
1203-1229: Non-stop Christian religious songs, many in English.
1229: Clear "Radio Vanuatu" SA/ID.
My edited audio at http://goo.gl/27xiGc .
Am still not hearing them on 3944.2.

VANUATU. 7259.96, R. Vanuatu. April 2 (Sunday), with the
second day of superior reception; found it hard to tune away,
as it's not often heard so well.
Highlights:
1134-1200: Syndicated Christian religious program in English -
"Tomorrow's World," talking about witchcraft, Halloween, the
occult, video games and Harry Potter.
1230-1300: Religious program in vernacular & religious music/
singing; nice organ music.
1300-1320: "Radio Vanuatu" SA/ID; drums & blowing of conch shell;
news in vernacular ("Vanuatu's foreign policy priorities"; cultural
exchange between Vanuatu & New Caledonia; Solomon Islands
government minister; etc.).
1320: "Sports News."
1332: Drums & blowing of conch shell.
1440-1453 & 1521-1528: EZL songs; strange they played several xmas
songs ("White Christmas," etc.). Surprised to be able to still hear them
this late.

chief visting Bangladesh, China plays a vital role in economic
development of the region, terrorist bomb blast in Pakistan at
Friday prayers, etc.; poor, with usual CODAR and CNR1 QRM,
but able to make out bits and pieces.
INDONESIA. 9524.95, VOI, 1358, April 3. Ending the segment
in English with clear SA/ID. Recently several stations have been heard
well above their normal reception, this one and Radio Vanuatu. Due
to propagation? My audio of SA/ID at http://goo.gl/maJ8fB .

doing well at last check, at 1402.

CHINA. 9505, Voice of Strait (Minnan language service), 1300,
April 26. Off just after the time pips; switched to 4900, which started
up a matter of seconds later. 6115 also switched over to 4940
("Voice of Taiwan Strait News Radio," as SA/IDed on Saturdays after
"Focus on China" English program [1500-1530]), which started
audio at 1301.
After almost three months of being on 4900, guess we can call this a
permanent change of frequency.
LAOS. 6130, Lao National Radio, 1404, April 26. In Chinese till
1424 indigenous music; 1430 switched over to English; 典his is the
Lao National Radio"; news; 1450-1500 a different segment in English;
1501 French; poor; not very readable, but able to confirm languages.
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio, 1328, April 26. Usual BoH
(their local ToH) format of singing SA/ID, giving three different "kilohertz"
frequencies, followed by chimes; in vernacular; almost good. My
local sunrise was at 1319 UT and their local sunset was at 1223 UT.
RUSSIA. 7345, Radio Sakha, via Yakutsk, 1226-1240, April 26. Doing
fairly well, but mixing with CNR1; traditional songs; after 1230 started to
also hear R. Thazin (Myanmar) underneath; Russia lost out to the other
two stations about 1240. Unable to hear // 7295.
