Strong QRN (static); no QRM from Japan today; very respectable summertime

broadcasting (checked 0530-0600); even with considerable daylight in Japan
(sunset not till 0940 UT), clearly heard "RN2" playing mostly non-stop pop songs,
with ID at 0600.
KOREA SOUTH. 4885, Echo of Hope - VOH, 1341, Aug 6. Language lesson ("Easy
English") in English and Korean; very readable; another day with native speaker of
English (Isaac); same program must have been broadcast two hours earlier (1141).

LAOS. 6130, Lao National Radio, 1401, Aug 6. No longer on their recently heard abbreviated
schedule, but seems back to their former full programming; fairly sure was in English (matching
their schedule); 1407, break for some indigenous singing; strong adjacent QRM; much of the
time was unusable; at 1434, unable to confirm in French, but definitely broadcasting.
PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1204-1211* on Aug 6; in English; cut off in mid-
sentence.
TAIWAN. 6230, Sound of Hope, at 1300, on Aug 6 and listening in LSB to get away from Australia
weather station in USB. The usual OM & YL with "Xiwang zhi sheng guoji guangbo diantai" (Sound
of Hope international broadcast station) ID (thanks again to Amano-san's assistance); surprised to
have some very light QRM from Australia, as some of their faint audio showed up in LSB.
VIETNAM. 8812-USB, Ho Chi Minh Radio - Vietnam Coast Station, on Aug 6, *1240-1242* in
Vietnamese and *1242-1244* in English; starts with "Weather information for South China coastal
waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 7:30PM, August 6," etc. Thanks very much to Wei

KOREA SOUTH. 4885, Echo of Hope - VOH, 1340, Aug 8. Language lesson ("Easy
English") in English and Korean; very readable; announcers "perky, perky Jenny" and
"happy Isaac." I was wrong, this program was no broadcast at 1140 nor 1240, so a new
schedule for this podcast.
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio, 1300-1310, Aug 7 (Wednesday). Two programs
together of "Learning English with BBC, Burmese." So is this language lesson only on
Wed. & Fri.?
VIETNAM. 8812-USB, assume a VISHIPEL coastal station (site?); *1314-1320*, on Aug 8.
This segment only in Vietnamese; sounded like many mentions of "Hong Kong"; my local
sunrise was at 1319 UT.

the air Aug 27 & 28; at 1106, with local news in Pidgin; pop songs (Belinda Carlisle -
"Heaven Is A Place On Earth," etc.); on 28th, cut off at 1201*.
CHINA. 6035, FM99 (Voice of Shangri-la) relay via PBS Yunnan. On Aug 27, with anomaly;
noted they had a problem with the usual FM99 audio feed, but instead was running non-stop
western classical music for quite awhile; noted several times before and shortly after 1200;
very enjoyable; by 1213, back to normal FM99 audio feed; no QRM of any kind (no BBS and

KOREA SOUTH. 4885, Echo of Hope - VOH. Seems to be changing their schedule a lot these
days. Not long ago the 1240-1300 time slot was for the language lesson "Easy English," but that
was re-scheduled to different times. Checking Aug 27 & 28, heard a rather different program 1240+;
programming was unique in that it consisted of an audio of non-stop English, but was rather weak,
underneath a much stronger audio in Korean, with a running translation of the underlying English.
Perhaps a lecture? First time I have heard this, after almost daily monitoring. At 1300, the usual

audio and one of "Onule Soshi."
VIETNAM [non]. 9670, Radio Dap Loi Song Nui (Vietnam Democracy Radio) (presumed), Aug 28,

siren jamming as always heard in the past, but instead was a pulsating noise; *1230, start of Radio
Dap Loi Song Nui; poor and mostly unusable.

KOREA NORTH[non]. new 5980 // 6070, Shiokaze/Sea Breeze, ex: 5920 & 6040, Aug 29.
Changed back to their alternate frequencies today; 1311, with "Newsflash" items in English.
KOREA SOUTH. 6015, KBS Hanminjok Bangsong 1, August 29, a special treat 1216+, as
there was no N. Korea jamming today (very rare); jamming still off at last 1316 check; SAs
"K B S News," with several clips in English during the news; also very unique to have a chance

Have you heard what is happening on 4885 kHz.? Seems to be some major changes.
Sept 3, from 1113 to 1335; no longer with the former distinctive "V O H" SAs; no
longer hearing the "Easy English" language lesson. 9100 noted off the air today,
otherwise // 3985 // 5995 // 6250 (much of the time also hearing Echo of Unification)
and // 6350; poor overall conditions today; most days I have much better reception.
Some highlights of today's reception:
1130-1200: Now with a unique language lesson that seems like more than 95% in
Korean and maybe less than 5% in English (nothing like "Easy English" format);
occasional brief spots in English during the half hour program, with all the English
put together again towards the end of the show. Have heard this for several days now.
1200-1210: Drama
1219: song - ABBA - "The Winner Takes It All"; all the other songs were in Korean.
1241-1250: Unique program with audio in English (weak), with stronger audio on top of
that in Korean, with running translation of the English underneath. Ends with audience
clapping, so perhaps a lecture or same type of presentation? Have heard this now for
several days.
1300-1313: Usual news program in Korean.

MYANMAR. 7110, Thazin Radio (presumed), 1354-1425, Sept 7. It was back in 2012-2013 that
"Thazin Radio, Pyin Oo Lwin" was regularly heard on this frequency; fairly confident the language
heard today was Burmese; played easy-listening pop songs. So is this ex: 6165 kHz.? Today I
didn't start listening till fairly late, so this needs some earlier monitoring to find out just what is
happening here. Of course Myanmar should not be here at all, as it is in the ham band. My audio

special day here. Not only was there audio, which is rather rare, but heard a song I had
not heard on SW for several years. I last reported hearing it back on Sept 6, 2017.
Today, 1400-1409 UT, with news and commentary in Bahasa Indonesia; followed by the
distinctive patriotic song "Garuda Pancasila" (aka: "Mars Pancasila"), which was
composed by Sudharnoto, with lyrics about the loyalty of all Indonesian people to
Pancasila as the only ideology or philosophy of the Indonesian nation. Am very
pleased with today's reception!

when they should have been broadcasting (around 1130), they were clearly off the air for
quite awhile, but did hear them later, running several hours past their normal cut off
time (1200). Today heard 1158-1430+; "NBC News," 1203-1209 and "NBC News Roundup,"
1301-1307, both in English; no news at 1400; played mostly variety of pop songs (Diana
Ross & Lionel Richie - "Endless Love," etc.); after 1209, relay of programs in English
from Port Moresby, with numerous SAs for "This is NBC"; no Voice of Indonesia QRM.
Has been about three years since I last heard a "NBC News Roundup" segment!

a new schedule? Unlike yesterday's reception free from Voice of Indonesia QRM, today with significant
VOI audio, making a mess of this frequency; both stations mostly unusable; checking 1217-1302 UTC;
again with "NBC News Roundup" at 1302.
This change is not totally unexpected. It will be recalled that this November will see the important
referendum vote to be taken to determine the possible independence of Bougainville. We can expect
this station to be a key means of disseminating information about the election. SW is especially alive
at election time!

MYANMAR. RE: WOR 2001 - Myanmar Radio - Glenn wondered if 5985 & 9730, where via
the same transmitter? Once I had assumed they were, as their sign off and sign on times
seemed to indicate that, but not so. A good number of times now I have noted them BOTH
on the air at the same time (overlapping), so definitely two separate transmitters.? ??

VIETNAM. 7155.0, VOV, on Sept 27, heard an interesting situation here at 1304. Clearly TWO
stations mixing together; one stronger signal in Chinese (// 7220) and a much weaker underneath
(// 7285); first time I have heard them both together. Thanks very much to Glenn, who last year
pointed out: "7285 at 1300-1330 in French, 7220 at same time in Chinese: 7285 leapfrog over
7220 another 65 kHz below lands on 7155."
UNIDENTIFIED. 4990-USB, 0410, Sept 26. American fishermen chatting; sounded like conversation
between fishing boats; first time I have ever heard anything like this here. Probably just off the coast
of Calif., as Monterey Bay and other coastal areas have fishing fleets.

pulsating noise jamming (seemed slower rate than 5980).

BTW - Myanmar Radio (5985), on Oct 2 (Wednesday), had mostly unusable reception (1246-1256)

Shiokaze on 5980 and also the fairly strong adjacent QRM from the new frequency for Echo of Hope -
VOH on 5990.

"PNG Power will be conducting major load shedding and disconnection exercises?throughout the country this week."

started up, so will take N. Korea awhile to move to the new NUR frequency, but unfortunately the 5920
jamming will eventually move up to 6045. NUR sudden change probably due to the VOF shift in frequency.

BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, on Oct 30, with impassioned political speeches
("... we people of Bougainville ...") from 1120 to 1140; then 1140-1201, with pop music; 1201-
1206, news in English (unreadable); after cut off at 1207*, only the carrier from Voice of
Indonesia, via Palangkaraya, was heard with no audio at all today, even when checked later.
KOREA NORTH. Seems they have reevaluated and updated their jamming situation via SW.
They are now actively responding to some of the Echo of Hope - VOH and Voice of the People
frequency changes that have been observed recently since Oct 1.
For me, the biggest find today (Oct 30) was that after years of non-stop daily N. Korea jamming
on 6135, found that frequency today was completely free of the usual jamming noise. Hope it is
not a one day only anomaly! Many years ago Voice of Freedom was on frequency, but 6135 has
not had a station to be jammed for a long time.
Today noted CRI on 6135, in English, from 1404 to past 1500 (scheduled 1400-1557). Had hoped
to check for R. Madagasikara on this frequency, but block by China when reception might have
been possible. Also the absence of 6135 noise jamming is of some help for reception of Lao
National Radio (6130), which was heard today about 1345. BTW - KBS, on 6015, was jammed
as usual with noise, so 6135 seemed to be an independent absence.??

Nov 1 - Yes, extremely strong jamming noted from 1015+, on 6045; totally blocking VOF;
while ex 5920 is now a clear frequency. So yesterday (Oct 31) was the last day that VOF
was in the clear with a good signal. Yesterday from 1507+, with very enjoyable music

3945, Echo of Unification (presumed), 1254-1319, in Korean with announcer and music;
in the clear during this time period, but weak. Schedule is 1200-1400, but Japan ("RN2,

overpower EOU for a half hour. ?

Qur'an; 1300-1310, news in vernacular; tentative SAs for "Sarawak FM" and "R T M"; reception
varied from very poor to almost fair, depending on the amount of adjacent QRM. My audio of four

not heard today.

KOREA NORTH. 6250, Echo of Unification, 1329, Nov 15. Fair reception, in the clear?due to fact that?Echo of Hope - VOH was up on 6255, along with N. Korean jamming of?VOH; that changed when VOH?moved down to 6250, to mix with EOU; jamming did not?move off 6255 to follow VOH, although later the?jamming was completely gone (not on?6250 nor 6255). A strange day!?? ??

KOREA SOUTH. Echo of Hope - VOH, random checking 1126 to 1335, Nov 15. Difficult?to keep up with the?fast moving changes today.
Summary of some of the items noted: 9105, completely off the air today; 4890, several times?noted off-on-off-on?again; VOH was jumping back and forth from 6250 (mixing with Echo of?Unification) to 6255. Even the N. Korean?jamming had anomalies: 1334, the jamming had?gone off on 6000 (still QRM from another station), 6255 and 6355 (now very good reception?without the jamming), whereas earlier all three frequencies where jammed.
So South Korea is actively trying to out run the jamming with these quick changes and N. Korea?jamming is?often not far behind. Seems no set frequency schedule any more?

much stronger CNR6; definitely in English; pop songs; at 1436, seemed to be the news; certainly
not a one-day-only event.
I last reported hearing them on this frequency back in 2017. Since then, have randomly checked
for any trace, even a hint, of Thazin, but with no success at all. So, for several years now have
only heard CNR6 from 1430 to 1500 and nothing else noted. With the stronger CNR6 here, will be
a real challenge to dig out any meaningful details. Can only hope for a day with outstanding
propagation favoring Myanmar. My local sunrise was at 1448 UTC. My audio, with stronger CNR6
announcer and weaker Thazin music, at http://bit.ly/2O0digm . Even with poor reception, am very
pleased to be hearing them again on this frequency!

been checking this new Mon-Wed-Fri broadcast without any success; only had a very weak
carrier and never any hint of audio, that is until today; above threshold level audio; poor reception,
with CODAR QRM; 1131-1147, phone interview in vernacular; 1147 till suddenly cut off at 1158*,
with indigenous chanting (no music); no sign off announcement. Later was able to confirm positive
SA via audio streaming at their website (https://www.radionyawasarawak.org/shows/02-12-2019),
by also hearing the unique chanting there.
One of the presenters today was Peter John Jaban. It will be recalled that he was a co-founder of
Radio Free Sarawak (RFS), as well as a DJ/presenter on RFS. He is a human rights activist. Also
recall this: "Radio Free Sarawak specialized in allowing native communities to speak out about their
problems including deforestation, land grabs and the frenzy of dam building now hitting their regions,"
which sounds very much like the purpose of the new station. So is Radio Nyawa Sarawak the successor
of RFS? Seems to me it is.
It will also be recalled that when RFS was on the air, they often had heavy jamming to block their critical
assessment about things happening in Sarawak. Perhaps it is only a matter of time before Radio Nyawa
Sarawak will also be heavily jammed? ? ?

much to Jose Jacob for the change of frequency info. Severe transmitter problems;
tuned into open carrier; 1215, very brief AIR IS and a few words spoken before they
went off the air; *1218, came back again, only to cut off at 1220*; same problem going
on when last checked at 1239; good signal strength.
KOREA NORTH. 3219.921, per Wolfie (listed 15 kW) // 3959.0 (listed 15 kW) // 2850
(listed 50 kW), 1245, on Dec 9. First two stations were weak, but nicely above threshold
level audio, while 2850 was very strong. Recently have noted these lower powered stations
daily with some audio. Thanks to Wolfie for his extensive survey of Korean stations. Very
helpful.

Vanuatu really likes playing "You Are the Only One," as noted in my 2015 log:
"VANUATU. 3945, R. Vanuatu, 1404-1434, Sept 25, 2015. Surprising well heard; usual long musical
loop; non-stop music and never any announcements; heard after the weekday sign off of "RN2"
(Japan); my local sunrise at 1358 UT.
It will be recalled that the song "You Are the Only One" is by far the most frequently played song here.
Sung by the group "Black Brothers," who in 1979 came to Vanuatu, to live in self-imposed exile, in
protest against Indonesian government policies and human rights violations. The group was originally
from West Papua. Today ?"You Are the Only One" was played at 1417 and again at 1431.

went to monitor 4KZ instead. So if Vanuatu signs off at 1200, per their schedule, then they will be
mixing with Jeypore for half an hour, which signs on at 1130?

played at Vishakapatnam, India; normally starts broadcasting at *1130, just after brief AIR IS, so
today's match coverage started earlier than normal; as usual was in both English and Hindi, but
what was highly unusual was that one of the announcers was a YL, which in the past, I believe,
was an exclusively all male activity for AIR. Fortunately now that Vanuatu has settled into their 1059*
schedule (noted the last two days), there is no conflict between the two. ?
MALAYSIA[non-Sarawak]. ?9835, Sarawak FM, via Kajang, 1109, Dec 18. Well above the norm; in
vernacular; commercial announcement for "Ford Ranger - sports performance" (brief audio attached);
DJ with pop songs; enjoyable listening.

English, replacing Burmese; today (Dec 18), found they had gone back to their former Burmese
(ex: English). Perhaps their whole schedule has changed today?
VANUATU. 5040, Radio Vanuatu, 1044-1059:49*, Dec 18. Same format as heard yesterday; religious
program followed by Xmas and religious songs ("Silent Night," etc.).

1037, with "You have been listening to the Grace Bible Baptist Church . . . the number is 7756760";
Xmas and religious songs ("Angels We Have Heard On High - Gloria in excelsis Deo," etc.); unlike
the last two days, heard a formal sign off format, consisting of SA in vernacular followed by Nation
Anthem ("Yumi, Yumi, Yumi"). Very nice reception!

Dec 27, noted Radio 4KZ (5055) was off the air from 1108+ (normal closing time is 1238*).
Is unusual for it to be silent, so sent off an email to Al Kirton (general manager of 4KZ).
Wondered if it was another case of him turning off the transmitter remotely when there
was a lot of lightning around? No, it was something else today.
His quick reply: "Hi Ron - The 4Gx modem at east Innisfail requires a reboot. I’ll go out
later today [his local Saturday, Dec 28 - Ron] and do it. Thank you for noticing this. We

SOH on 6230 and 6280, which are traditional SOH frequencies, so was surprised to find a new SOH
signal // to 6230 (today 6280 was blocked by strong CNR1 jamming). New frequency stronger than
6230 // 6280 ever heard in the past. At *1157, start of a marine message in USB; sounded Aussie(?),
with "All stations, all stations, all stations, . . Australia India Charlie . . ., Australia India Charlie . ."
(definitely not Taupo Maritime Radio); mostly blocked by SOH's signal; message was fairly short.
One possibility is perhaps "Maritime Safety Queensland" - https://www.msq.qld.gov.au/Safety/Marine-radios .
At 1200, SOH usual ID by OM and YL with "Xiwang zhi sheng guoji guangbo diantai" (Sound of Hope
international broadcast station). Audio on new frequency seemed more muffled than other SOH
frequencies? Needs more monitoring. On one hand, is nice to have a new SOH frequency with
decent signal strength, but on the other hand, is also unfortunate to be strongly blocking marine
messages/alerts.
