stop chanting (no music); usual SA/ID in English; 典his is the North
Eastern Service of All India Radio broadcasting from Shillong on
shortwave 60.26 meters, corresponding to 4,970 kilohertz and an
additional FM 100.1 megahertz." My local sunrise at 1312 UT.
May 3, heard with amazingly good audio level; 1230 EZL jazz filler
music till start of the news from Delhi in English at 1232, already in
progress, with item about the supreme court ruling today; stock
market info and sports news. Great to have them with such good
modulation again!
INDONESIA. 4869.9, Pro 1 RRI Wamena [non-log], as of May 2,
continues silent.
9524.95, VOI, 1310, April 28. In English with promo for this years
quiz; "commentary"; "Today in History" (this date in 1949 Chairil
Anwar, Indonesian poet, died; this date 2001, Dennis Tito became
first paying [$20M] passenger to go into outer space); fairly readable.
April 30, VOI with usual language assignments, but out of syn with
normal timing; English already started by 1248, instead of 1300. Next
day back to normal.
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio, *1120, May 2. Suddenly on;
fair; in vernacular.
PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1137-1203*, April 30
(Sunday). In Pidgin/Tok Pisin with religious (Christian) program of
mostly songs; 1201 switched to different audio feed (TV?), to catch
the closing announcement in English for what sounded like a religious
show ("on every Sunday"); cut off before the start of the normal Sunday
"Island Praise" program; reception well above the norm.
[non-log]. 7324.95, Wantok Radio Light, 1402, May 1. Continuing
with their long absence. Off for about a year now? A clear frequency
at this time period.
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, SIBC, with no extended broadcast on
April 28 & 29; off about 1202*.
April 30 (Sunday), with extended broadcast of religious (Christian) songs
in English till 1244*, assume Wantok FM relay, but no SA/IDs as such.
May 1, at 1200 ended NA; dead air (open carrier) till 1203 start of assume
Wantok FM relay, but the brief, frequent announcements between every 2-3
pop songs never mentioned Wantok; seemed to be a new format for these
brief announcements; the IDs were certainly not anything like the usual
often heard Wantok FM SA/IDs; 1332*.
May 2, another extended broadcast; after NA, at 1202, a seamless
switch over to SIBC format programming of pop songs in English
("I Only Want To Be With You," "How Deep Is Your Love," "Take My
Breath Away," "Uptown Girl," "Old Time Rock n Roll," etc.); 1202-1308,
with 20 straight non-stop songs without even one announcement or SA/ID;
mostly fair. With these extended broadcasts, is now one of my favorite
stations to listen to!
May 3, no extended broadcast.

news till covered at 1101 by strong CNR1 (China) sign on.
They broadcast in Russian, Yakut and Evenki languages.
7295 remains unheard. Thanks to feedback from Hiroyuki
Komatsubara (Japan), on May 3: "7295kHz RUSSIA Radio
Sakha, still off air," with "7345kHz RUSSIA Radio Sakha,
strong signal," both at 1057.
In the past they always gave their SA/ID religiously at
xx:50, but recently noted more often than not about
xx:55-xx:57.

music/singing. Recently has been doing fairly well.

CHINA. 6035, PBS Yunnan (Voice of Shangri-la), 1146-1201*, May 9.
A few brief announcements in Chinese; classical waltz music (Johann
Strauss II - An der schönen blauen Donau, Op. 314 [aka: "The Blue
Danube Waltz"], etc.); much stronger signal than usual. Last year often
heard BBS (Bhutan) here till after 1200, but they have not been heard
for a while now, so assume with an earlier sign off time now?
EAST TURKISTAN[non-log]. 4850, 4980 and 5060, PBS Xinjiang,
on May 9, made their seasonal change away from these frequencies;
now these three frequencies are in the clear.
INDIA. 4895 [non-log], AIR Kurseong, off the air again May 9.
4970, AIR Shillong, on May 9, with yet another day of strong audio;
1230 news feed in English from Delhi. My five minute news audio

So I am not hearing them underneath a strong Guangxi Beibu Bay
Radio (China). In the past I had no problem hearing AIR mixing with
BBR, so Aizawl must have come down significantly in power?
PAPUA NEW GUINEA[non-log]. 3260, NBC Madang and 3275,
NBC Southern Highlands both silent on May 9, at 1202; unlike
yesterdays receptions; today with unique conditions, as the lower
powered Korean station on 3220 was unusually strong today.
SIKKIM. 4835, AIR Gangtok (presumed), 1240, May 9, during a brief
check here, was able to hear an announcer, so just above threshold
level audio; is rare that this gets up to this level, so an outstanding day
for subcontinent reception.

Since Yesterday, Certain Korean DXer has checked 97.0 MHz, one of the frequencies of
Echo of Unification insists North Korea has been operating that at 'independent non-government
organization' is transmitting KCBS, which is known as a national broadcast. We didn't find
out what they want by sending KCBS yet. Now, 97.0 MHz on the night time has been received for
2 hours, from 21:30 to 23:30 like the time of Echo of Unification, so we guess it may be just
transmitting test. today I also turned 89.4 and 97.8 MHz, but they were EOH.

97.0 MHz: KCBS (We guess it is the test signal of EOH now.)

to WRTH Facebook page by Mauno Ritola. May 15, seemed to sign
on about 1130(?), checked this new frequency on and off after 1107;
first noted at 1137; in Korean and playing easy listening pop songs;
an abbreviated transmission of about an hour; they went off close to
1238* and not heard after that. Ex: 6135, heard only white noise
jamming there as usual.
The format certainly seemed correct for VOF; clearly not on their

(clandestine) (presumed). May 16, at 1013, tuned in to hear
this new frequency; clearly not Vietnam (VOV4), which is also
on this frequency; suddenly off at 1017*; VOF's usual 6135,
only had the normal white noise jamming and the other new VOF
frequency that was heard yesterday on 5920, was silent all of
today.
At 1018, found VOF had switched to 6135, underneath the normal
white noise jamming; usual format of being in Korean and playing
EZL songs; still there at last check of 1240, with 5920 silent
and a weak VOV4 on 6020.
Seems therefore that they are randomly testing their two new frequencies
(5920 & 6020), as well as using their normal 6135. Certainly no pattern
yet established as to their testing schedule

but unable to confirm due to lack of specific details; was intensely
listening for their unique indigenous music, but there was none, just
the OM with monologue. Needs more monitoring now that it might
be BBS.

Were the new frequencies 5995 and 6350 just tests?
May 22, at 1039, noted them back on former 6003 (ex 5995)
// 6348 (ex 6350), as well as the usual // 3985 // 6250; all were
jammed.
At 1121 found all four frequencies in the clear, with no white noise
jamming; 3985 fair reception; 6003 good; 6250 fair (the best I have
ever heard then here!) and 6348 fair. Jamming resumed within a
minute or two.
5920, Voice of Freedom (clandestine) (presumed). Still testing?
Tuned in at 0913 (poor reception) and still on the air when tuned
out at 1125 (good reception), on May 22; of course nice clear signal,
as white noise jamming was still up on former 6135.

been reported (thanks to Ivo Ivanov), CNR6 is currently off the air
here, leaving the frequency clear for Myanmar, which was normally
blocked by China; 1416, on May 25, heard in vernacular and playing
EZL songs; 1430 usual theme music intro to their English segment
of mostly playing pop songs; clearly in English, but mostly unreadable;
poor reception, but only one station here now.
Have to try to also remember to check on 7345 kHz., as CNR1 is
now off the air there, which should leave Thazin Radio with a much
better chance of being heard before 1200 (CRI signs on then), so
only Radio Sakha (Russia) QRM to contend with.

On May 25, I was listening first to a very strong signal from Wai FM
(Malaysia), on 11665, at 1244 and heard an elegant reciting from
the Qur'an by a woman, which is extremely rare to hear on SW.
More than 99% of the time only done by men. Thought perhaps
something special was going on.
Later at 1255, tuned to Sarawak FM (Malaysia), on 9835, at 1255,
also with good reception, to hear a talk about Ramadan, which sent
me to the web to find out if we are close to the start of this yearly event.
Yes, I found that "Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, has announced
that the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, state
media said on Thursday." So this coming weekend will in fact be the
start of Ramadan.
It is the time of year to now check SW for renewed activity from Islamic
countries; e.g. Indonesia, which in past years did reactivate dormant
stations, as well as other stations/countries running special programs.
Expect to hear a lot more reciting from the Qur'an during my morning
band scans.
BTW - In the past, the Monday & Thursday relay of Limbang FM, via Wai
FM, on 11665, during 1315-1400 UT, always had just SA/IDs for "Limbang FM,"
but this Thursday (May 25) noted their new SA/ID being used many times -

inauguration of India’s longest bridge, Dhola-Sadiya.
1227-1247: Pre-speech report from the festival; background sounds;
seemed to be in mostly Hindi, but some English spots; // 4920, AIR
Chennai, which now has beautiful reception due to PBS Xizang being
temporarily off the air, and also // 5010, AIR Thiruvananthapuram.
1247: Start of the PM's impassioned speech in Hindi to the crowd at the
festival; still being given when tuned out at 1325.
The speech was carried by most of the other AIR regional stations, but
clearly not by AIR Jeypore (5040). Unable to confirm // to 4835 (AIR
Gangtok) and the same for AIR Radio Kashmir, Srinagar (4950), as
both just heard with open carriers; not strong enough for audio.
AIR Kurseong (4895) and AIR Aizawl (5050) continue to be silent.

But it seemed Taereung increased the power of 9100 kHz.
Finally, I could listen to EOH on 9100 kHz on May 27.
And since that day, 4885 and 9100 kHz have been sending contents like other frequencies.
Now all frequencies work from 15:00 to 09:00 for the same time.

not only Echo of Hope but also almost all propaganda including Shiokaze. By May 2017,
Frequencies are some changed among the standard of Short Wave broadcastings, 5 kHz,
even though 6348 kHz is one of the longest frequency keeping with the jamming, of
course, minor alternations such as 2 kHz don't influence on receiving the radio.
Anyway, North Korea also adjusted their jammers following them, and it showed the
fact they have always been monitoring Echo of Hope. Now, the jammers aiming at Echo
of Hope are 3985, 5995, 6003, 6250, 6348 and 9100 kHz, and 4885 and 9100 kHz, which
are new frequencies comparatively, don't have the jammers yet.

I received EOH's Opening, Ending, and Shortly before the rerun on June 1st, and I
discovered them are changed. Maybe it will mean their test is all done, so their
frequencies will keep.

Wow! Certainly 6350 kHz exactly Jamming from North Korea has not appeared.
When receiving with No Sync mode by ICF-SW7600GR, side jamming of 6348 kHz is
worrisome, but it can avoid jamming when it receives with Sync on USB!
By the way, the start and end of the VOH broadcasting is 0600-0000 UTC(1500-0900 KST),
but the latest program of VOH (the base point of the latest program) is from 1500
UTC(0000 KST), isn't it?
I was taught by Chulsu-san about it.

in past years, they are now on the air 1400-1500, just during Ramadan;
their usual schedule is to be off the air during 14-15; heard with HOA
music and a call in program; weak.
ZAMBIA[non-log]. 5915, R. One/ZNBC1, through 0432, June 12. They
continue to be silent, as Bill Bingham (RSA) and I have both monitored
this past week; seems like a significant problem, unrelated to the former
"load shedding."

INDONESIA. Change of frequency to 9526.0, VOI, ex: 9524.95,
at 1358, on June 13, with full SA/ID in English; into Indonesian
segment.
KOREA NORTH[non]. 6165, Shiokaze/Sea Breeze, via Yamata,
*1405-1435*, June 13. In Japanese; usual intro and closing for
Shiokaze, but main body of the program is "Furusato No Kaze"
("Wind of Hometown"), thanks to Hiroshi for this info; CNR6 has
returned to the air here, so some QRM.
KOREA SOUTH. On June 13:
Echo of Hope - VOH, at 1348:
3985 // 5995 // 6250, all were jammed;
// 4885 // 6350 // 9100, all with no jamming.
Voice of the People, at 1353:
3910 // 3930 // 4450 // 6520 // 6600, all were jammed.
Voice of Freedom, on 5940, with no jamming; strong signal today at 1331.

new VOI frequency. He provides:
"Checked the Voice of Indonesia Cimanggis program on upper
channel flank, noted at 1752 UT in eastern Thailand at S=6 rather
weak signal on exact 9525.940 kHz."
