Ron Howard Jan 01, 2018 20:15 UTC No.2899 New Year's Greetings from California!
AUSTRALIA. 5045, Ozy Radio, 1508, Jan 1. Always best in LSB
due to QRM from BBR (China) on 5050; John Paul Young, Scottish
born Australian pop singer with "Love Is In the Air," Australian pop
band Leonardo's Bride, with "Even When I'm Sleeping," the band
originally from New Zealand who moved to Australia, etc.; frequent
IDs ("right here on Ozy Radio," etc.); decent reception still at 1554.
5055, Radio 4KZ, brief check at 1531, Jan 1, with the usual program;
YL with on-air phone calls; close to readable. Again best in USB.
BOTSWANA. 4930, VOA, continuing with their expanded schedule;
Jan 1 at 0151; New Year's Eve music program of pop songs; "Happy
New Year from the Hit - VOA 1"; fair.
CHINA. 7415 // 9455 // 9860, Firedragon/Firedrake (music jamming)
at 1707+, on Jan 1; strong jamming of RFA.
ERITREA. 7140.0, VOBME 1 (presumed), 1455-1503, on Jan 1. HOA
music/singing; in vernacular; hit with strong jamming (white noise or
DRM?) at *1503; also ham QRM.
7181.55, VOBME 2 (presumed), 1455-1503, on Jan 1. In vernacular
with on-air phone calls; some HOA music/singing; hit with strong
jamming (white noise or DRM?) at *1503; also ham QRM.
ETHIOPIA. 7236.55v, R. Ethiopia (presumed), 1505, on Jan 1.
Drifting, with HOA music/singing; poor with ham QRM.
INDONESIA[non-log]. 9525.95, VOI, on Jan 1, at 1454, clearly off the
air; no carrier at all.
PHILIPPINES. 17700, R. Pilipinas, on Jan 1, with well above average
reception; very readable; 0203 montage of recordings of past presidents;
0212 - show "It's more fun in the Philippines" (tourist program); 0318 year
end review of highlights from the "Dateline Malacang・programs; special
year end PBS news review (president's "War on drugs"); 0328 closing SA
with the correct frequencies given; National Anthem; 0329*; this frequency
much better than // 15640 or 17820.

Ron Howard Jan 02, 2018 22:44 UTC No.2901 AUSTRALIA. 5055, Radio 4KZ, 1231+, on Jan 2. Noted decent
audio level earlier than usual; commercial announcements ("money
back guarantee," etc.); pop songs - Kenny Loggins "Whenever I
Call You Friend," Herman's Hermits "There's A Kind Of Hush All
Over The World," The Lovin' Spoonful "Daydream," etc.; 1300-1306
with news, sports (item about tennis player Andy Murray), weather
and SW SA (".. 60 meter band .."); format: 1231-1300 pop music,
then 1306-1400 & 1405+ with call-in program with the usual YL
announcer.
BHUTAN. 6035, BBS, on Jan 2, checking 0110-0130; didn't hear
any sign on, but checking again at 0134, they were on the air; only
carrier heard. Jim Young, listening in Southern Calif., noted *0132.
My Dec 27 non-log perhaps due to late sign on?
BOLIVIA. 6134.82, R. Santa Cruz. Jan 2, with usual closing format
of the "Santa Cruz" song 0203-0205, then dead air for a long time
(0300+).
BTW - 5952.42, Radio Pio Doce, was already off the air by 0103, on
Jan 2, after their greatly extended schedule for New Year's Eve.
CHINA. 4990, PBS Hunan. Starting suddenly in Jan 2015, I found the
reception here had greatly improved and had been so till several months
ago; since then have mostly had below threshold level audio. Gone are
the days of decent reception!
ETHIOPIA. 6030, Radio Oromiya (presumed), on Jan 2. CNR1 the
strongest station here, with Calgary (Canada) with slow, deep fading in
and out at 1453, with comedy and canned laughter; by 1458 suddenly
realized I was also hearing definite HOA music/singing in the mix. Has
been a long time since I last heard this station!
INDONESIA[and non-log]. 3325, Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya, 1517+, on
Jan 2. Segment with all songs in English; Alphaville "Forever Young,"
Erma Franklin "Piece of My Heart," etc.; "Pro satu RRI Palangkaraya" SA
jingle, best in USB due to Korea on 3320; strong CW QRM the whole
time. The only Indonesian on SW today!
9525.95, VOI, on Jan 2, found still off the air; no carrier at all.
KOREA NORTH. 6400, Pyongyang BS, 1450, on Jan 2. A very strong
signal here; never before heard at this level; // 3320 (not // 3219.9). Result
of better conditions today?
PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, Jan 2 running later than
usual (past normal 1200*); 1205 end of the "NBC News" in English; into
pop music show till suddenly off at 1230*.
SIKKIM. 4835.0, AIR Gangtok, 0058, Jan 2. Tentatively heard the
AIR IS, which was later confirmed by Jim Young, listening in Southern
Calif.
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, SIBC, 1150-1203*, on Jan 2. Unique format
without the normally heard "Evening devotional," instead pop songs up till
the usual canned full SA; suddenly off after a few notes of the NA.

Hi Glenn,
The following posts are from WRTH Facebook. Craig Allen is the
owner and operator of Ozy Radio (5045 kHz.).
M Breyel - This email also just in from Al Kirton [4KZ - 5055 kHz.]:
"In two or three weeks we should be up to 1.2 kilowatts." (posted
about 0600 UT, Jan 3)
Craig Allen - "Both 5045Khz and 5055khz use Omnidirectional NVIS
antennas so the closer you are to each service the better the signal.
5055khz [4KZ] is covering the North of Australia and 5045khz [Ozy
Radio] covers the south, soon there will be 5050khz for the West
coast of Australia and 4835Khz for the middle."
(posted about 0200 UT, Jan 3)
Craig's future 5050 kHz., will of course go head to head with Beibu Bay
Radio, broadcasting from Nanning, in southern China (near Vietnam),
with 15 kW of power. Future 4835 kHz. will be unfortunate for continued
AIR Gangtok (Sikkim) reception, which here in the states is a challenge
to hear now without any QRM (once ABC Alice Springs NT closed down
it became possible to again hear Gangtok).

Jan 3, indeed found SIBC on 5020. At 1201, with the end of the
National Anthem; then just carrier (dead air); by 1240 could make
out pop music, but low modulation and significant dead air between
songs; 1345 played Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band's song
"Against the Wind"; still being heard with low modulation at final
check at 1610. Most of today was unusable! Only a few brief
announcements heard, so not the frequent SAs for "Wantok FM,"
so assume this was SIBC extended programming and not the
relay.

BOUGAINVILLE[non-log]. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 1123, on Jan 4.

promo for the "Calgary Motorcycle Show," being held this Fri.-Sat.-Sun.
CHINA. 5112 USB, VC01 (Chinese military numbers station), with

subcontinent chanting/singing, so a fair chance it was them.
7505.47, off frequency AIR, via New Delhi (Kingsway), 0216, on
Jan 5. Nice subcontinent music; my local sunset was at 0105 UT,
while Delhi sunrise was at 0145 UT. Of course this reception possible
with the absence of WRNO (USA). Last Jan also noted AIR here, but
was on 7505.0 and again with WRNO silent back then.
INDONESIA[non-logs]. 3325, Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya, recently off
the air, but on Jan 4, was hearing a decent level carrier here (dead air)
with no audio at all from 1222 to 1316, but by 1342 the carrier was gone;
so perhaps RRI working on their transmitter?

0230: Test tone already on; mixing with CRI (China), in Russian.
0240: Test tone off; start of the distinctive call of the African Fish
Eagle (national bird of Zambia) IS, till Anthem at 0251; still mixing
with CRI.
0306+: African pop music/singing; CRI already gone.
0344-0354: intro & exit music certainly sounded religious (Christian),
with assume preaching in vernacular; followed by repetitive African
drums and singing.
0359: Call of the African Fish Eagle, along with music.
0400-0404: News in vernacular, followed by rooster crowing & ads(?).
0406+: Two announcers chatting and laughing; gave phone number and
started taking on air calls.
0422-0426: just a carrier (dead air), with no audio.
0426: Back with normal audio and phone calls.

BOTSWANA. 4930, VOA, continuing with their expanded schedule;
Jan 13 at 0042; first time I have ever heard indigenous African music
here, usually only hearing Western style pop songs (The hit - VOA 1,
English language music network). Program called "African Music Mix";
this from their website:
"From North to South and East to West, African Music Mix plays only
the best. Tune in and enjoy the non-stop dance-party with your favorite
African artists. Drawing from an archive of over 15,000 African selections
of dance music styles such as N'dombolo, Benga, Hip-Life, Couper-Decaler,
Fuji, Mbalax, Rai, Kwaito, Hip Hop, and Desert Blues. Join the party and
listen to African Music Mix, the best variety of African dance music."

CHINA. 5050, Beibu Bay Radio. More and more I'm recently hearing
segments after 1500+ that are in English, as well as the normal Chinese.
Jan 13, at 1512, in English explaining about some pop song; into a comedy
skit that also had some English, but mostly in Chinese. More monitoring
is needed to determine just how prevalent this English is.
INDIA. 4970, AIR Shillong, at 1542, Jan 13, sports item in English about
today's South Africa vs India cricket match (see Jeypore); news headlines -
helicopter crash off Mumbai coast, etc.
5040, AIR Jeypore, 1431-1450, Jan 13. Live coverage from South Africa
of the India vs RSA cricket match; in English & Hindi; AIR promo to contact
them via email at cricket @ allindiaradio.com; "South Africa 5 wickets down,"
etc. Thanks very much to Dave Valko for the early alert that this was on!
INDONESIA[and non-log]. 3325, Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya, 1539, Jan 13.

9525.95, VOI, on Jan 13, still off the air; no carrier at all; at 1539.
RUSSIA. 7345, Radio Sakha, via Yakutsk. Jan 13 (Saturday), at 0200, with
time pips and ID; weekend schedule 0000-0500, while weekdays is 0300-0500;
again being heard at ToH without their distinctive Jew's harp (khomus) IS.
Re: China - Beibu Bay Radio with English -
Ron Howard Jan 14, 2018 17:30 UTC No.2944 Jan 14 - Indeed BBR definitely has an English segment between
the Chinese programming; today's 1516-1521 segment was the
audio feed from the Jan 3 "Jimmy Kimmel Live" ABC (USA) TV show,
with interview of actress Jessica Chastain; fair and readable.

Yes, 4KZ is in fact on a new schedule. This per Al, on Jan 14 (2320 UT):

Ron Howard Jan 16, 2018 04:17 UTC No.2950 AUSTRALIA. 5045, Ozy Radio, on Jan 15, at 1215. Sounded like a
Public Service Announcement, along with SA; pop songs; Australian
folk group, The Seekers, with "A World of Our Own," etc.; best in LSB.
5055, Radio 4KZ. Best in USB; 1144-1205*, Jan 15. Checking for the
new sign off time; did go off the air, so tuned away, assuming they were
really off for good, but not so; a 1223 check, found them back on the air
again; still broadcasting 1357+; mostly pop songs ("I Want to Know What
Love Is" by Foreigner, etc.). Ozy Radio (5045) better today than 4KZ.
INDIA. 5040, AIR Jeypore, 1126, Jan 15. Third day of live coverage
from South Africa of the India vs RSA cricket match; in English & Hindi;
asking listeners to contact them at cricket @ allindiaradio.?; later back to
regular programming (subcontinent music/singing), as rain interrupted the
South Africa match.
INDONESIA[and non-log]. 9525.95, VOI, on Jan 14, still off the air; no
carrier at all at 1324. Jan 15, no carrier at 1138, 1307 & 1359 checking.
So 3325 (Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya) remains the only active SW Indonesian
station.
KOREA NORTH/SOUTH. 6250, on Jan 15, at 1257, with a rare event;
instead of the normal heavy jamming from N. Korea, was able to hear two
stations mixing together with no jamming; from the south with the much
weaker Echo of Hope - Voice of Hope (10 kW) and from the north with
Echo of Unification (100 kW); 1259 clear "V O H" SA underneath EOU.
Usually the jamming is so strong here it's impossible to tell what is going
on. My audio at http://goo.gl/sQQwKu .
KOREA NORTH. On Jan 14, at 1148, noted no jamming at all on
3910, 3930, 3985, 5995, 6015, 6135, etc. Again on Jan 15, at 1252,
all N. Korea jamming off the air on same frequencies. A daily event?
KOREA SOUTH. Echo of Hope - Voice of Hope (VOH). Thanks very
much to Hiroyuki Komatsubara, who recently noted that VOH has
dropped their third program ("Hope plaza of my brothers" or "Hope
Plaza of my brothers who have been defeated"), which had been
exclusively on 6350.
Heard Jan 14, at 1131:
4885 - "Radio Broadcasting Guide" (not // to the other frequencies).
This one hour program is repeated every hour. Never jammed.
3985 // 5995 // 6250 // 6350 // 9100 - The main VOH program; all jammed
except for 9100.
MYANMAR. 5915, Myanmar Radio, 1327, on Jan 15. Anomaly of CRI
being off the air; very rare; able to hear indigenous music/singing, but
strong QRM from 5920, with the N. Korea jamming of the Voice of Freedom
from S. Korea, so best in LSB.
7200.0, Myanmar Radio, 1230, Jan 14. Start of the lectures via Distance
Learning Service; mostly in vernacular; mentioned in English "long vowels"
and "short vowels"; fair. My frequency reference of .0, is due to the fact
that in past years this was often off frequency (7200.1), via a different
transmitter. Jan 15, off the air at 1341*, after theme music.
PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1201-1228*, Jan 14. Poor
reception during their normal Sunday religious music program.
BTW - NBC Bougainville (3325) continues silent through Jan 15.

no N. Korea jamming yet; now totally blocking reception of Tibet (PBS

Ex: 6085 still being jammed by N. Korea today.

tip that he tentatively was hearing NBC here on Jan 16 & 17. Interview
and monologues in Pidgin; 1120 into music segment with DJ in Pidgin;
several clear "NBC Bougainville" SAs. Very nice to have them back again!
Unable to hear any RRI QRM.
INDIA. 5040, AIR Jeypore. Jan 16, with day 4 of India vs RSA cricket
match being held in South Africa, at 1139+; seemed more English coverage
today than usual (nice!); still also with Hindi coverage.
No cricket Jan 17, from AIR Jeypore. Did hear test tone at 1126; 1127 tone
off; 1128 AIR IS; fair signal and at times good reception.
Jan 18, day 5 of cricket coverage, at 1220.
Still off frequency 7555.57v, AIR via Delhi-Kingsway, 1310, Jan 18.
Daily slightly different frequency; subcontinent singing/chanting.

MYANMAR. 5915, Myanmar Radio. Since Jan 15, has been wonderful
to hear this station without the normally dominating strong CRI. Jan 18,
(1238 & 1307) still clear of CRI, but as usual QRM from 5920, with the
N. Korea jamming of the Voice of Freedom from S. Korea, so best in LSB.
So what happened to CRI?
7200.0, Myanmar Radio, 1230, Jan 17. Start of the lectures via Distance
Learning Service; in vernacular and a lot of English: lecture on nuclear
technology (applications in agriculture, industry, research, molecular biology,
etc.), English with heavy accent; lecture on "gravitational force," with many
equations; 1349* after theme music; fair-good.
Jan 18, exceptionally strong signal; 1230+; lecture about isotopes, molecules,
electrons, etc., with many different equations ("Find the different wavelengths
of an electron moving with a speed of . . . ," etc.); noticeable hum. My audio at

Re: Asia - Pacific DX log (14) -
Ron Howard Jan 20, 2018 22:52 UTC No.2957 AUSTRALIA. 5055, Radio 4KZ. Best in USB; random listening
1125 till off at 1405*, Jan 20. Mostly pop songs; Petula Clark
"Downtown," Roy Orbison(?) "Crying," Blue Swede "Hooked on
a Feeling," America "A Horse With No Name," etc.; 1400-1405
news before cut off. Any day that I can make out multi-song IDs,
is indeed a good day!
CHINA. 5050, Beibu Bay Radio. On Jan 19, during 1500-1530,
with mostly Chinese, but also with what I would best describe as
an eclectic assortment of English (brief comedy skit and reading of
Lord Byron's "She Walks in Beauty," by Vincent Price); songs in
English (Mac Davis with "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me," Augustana
with "Boston," Fiddler on the Roof (Broadway) song "To Life"; mostly
fair. My recording at http://goo.gl/iWA67s .
KOREA NORTH/SOUTH. 6250, on Jan 20, at 1318, another day hearing
two stations mixing together with no N. Korea jamming; from the south with
a somewhat weaker Echo of Hope - Voice of Hope (10 kW) and from the
north with Echo of Unification (100 kW); "V O H" SA underneath EOU; *1323
jamming started, totally covering both stations.
KOREA NORTH. On Jan 20, at 1318, noted no jamming at all on 3910,
3930, 3985, 5995, 6015, 6135, etc.; jamming started at *1323. Perhaps
giving the south a brief respite from the jamming due to upcoming Olympics?
Look for these daily breaks! Dave Valko on the East Coast also noted
"unjammed 1006 and again at 1209," with 6520 and 6600 in the clear.
MYANMAR. 7200.0, Myanmar Radio, 1230, Jan 20. Start of the lectures
via Distance Learning Service; trigonometry lesson with many equations.
Five minute audio at http://goo.gl/oXgRaj .
PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1151-1226*, Jan 20. In Pidgin;
seemed to be interviews about the disputed 2017 Madang regional
election results (http://goo.gl/YGEyKG); first time I have heard
this Public Service Announcement - testing of their emergency
announcement system with series of tones followed in Pidgin and
tones again followed in English, that if there had been an emergency,
listeners should tune to NBC for announcements; suddenly cut off.
SUDAN. off frequency 7204.0, Sudan Radio (presumed), 0447, Jan 20.
Sounded to be in Arabic, but weak; nothing on 7205.0.
ZAMBIA. 5915, R. One/ZNBC, at 0415, on Jan 20. 纏ambia National

5010 AIR Thiruvananthapuram - Poor.

Re: Radio OMN testing again on 11600 kHz. -
Ron Howard Jan 26, 2018 18:25 UTC No.2984 ETHIOPIA[non]. 11600, Radio OMN (Oromia Media Network) via
Kostinbrod/Sofia, testing on Jan 26; tuned in at 1554 to hear their carrier
already on; 1600 start of program; perhaps in the Oromo language, as
directed to the the Oromo people of Ethiopia; three minutes into the
broadcast hit with jamming. OMN is a U.S. based nonprofit organization,
located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Website https://www.oromiamedia.org/ .
Grayline reception, with my local sunrise at 1513 UT and Sofia sunset at
1531 UT. Also heard today at 1600, by Edward Kusalik via a remote in
Europe (HB9DC).
Thanks very much to Mauno Ritola (WRTH Facebook) for the tip that OMN
is again testing. I last heard them testing on Dec 22 (1524-1532), when they
were on the air 1500-1600; new testing time is an hour later. My five minute
audio at http://goo.gl/DHikcB .

Ron Howard Jan 27, 2018 04:43 UTC No.2989 AUSTRALIA. 5045, Ozy Radio, on Jan 25, at 1408. Usual
commercial announcement for Tecsun radios, laughing kookaburra,
"Waltzing Matilda" and full SA; pop songs; Australian singer Kylie
Minogue with "Locomotion," etc.; 1431-1446 international news
(many items about US president, N. Korea, Russia, etc.); best in LSB.
5055, Radio 4KZ. Best in USB; 1359-1404*, Jan 25. Elton John song;
news till suddenly off the air.
INDIA. Regarding my eve of Republic Day reception (Jan 25) -
very much appreciate feedback from Gautam Kumar Sharma
(Abhayapuri, Assam, India), which confirms many of my observations:
"Thanks for your observations on reception quality of AIR Regional
Stations specially from the North East. Yes, AIR-Shillong is now
heard with low intensity audio level..(i.e.perhaps low modulation)
on 4970kHz...as I regularly aircheck in the morning 0030-0330 utc..
And also with slight rough audio. Both AIR-Aizawl on 5050kHz &
AIR-Kursong on 4895kHz are not heard here from a long time. As
posted by me in DX India Yahoo Groups..recently AIR-Gangtok on
4835kHz was heard with strong hum and as per my latest monitoring
now it was off the air. As reported earlier in DX Circles...AIR-Chennai
was noted with strong hum for a few days but it was rectified within
a very short time. Now the most consistence reception giving AIR
Regional Shortwave Station is AIR-Jeypore on 5040kHz.."
Jan 26, noted that AIR Gangtok (4835) seemed back to normal at 1307,
with faint audio, but no transmitter hum. Yesterday clearly off the air.
5040, AIR Jeypore, 1218, Jan 26. Yet another day of live coverage from
South Africa of the India vs RSA cricket match; in English; later with
coverage in Hindi.
INDONESIA[and non-log]. 9525.95, VOI, Jan 26. Still off the air through
1117. Only active Indonesian SW station is Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya (3325),
heard Jan 26, at 1537, with indigenous music/chanting; mostly fair (Ron
Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA)
KOREA NORTH/SOUTH. 6250, on Jan 26, at 1228, with Echo of Hope -
Voice of Hope in the clear (no jamming) with good signal; at *1230 hit with
the strong sign on of Echo of Unification.
KOREA NORTH. Seems the Olympic diplomacy is really working? On
Jan 26, at 1106, found about a 20 minute segment of no jamming at all on
3910, 3930, 3985, 5995, 6015, 6135, 6250, etc.; most of the S. Korea
stations had fair to good reception; jamming started about 1127 for most
frequencies, but for some reason didn't jam 3910, 3930 nor 3985. Again
at 1228+ had no jamming at all till *1244. In the past was extremely rare
to find these segments with no jamming, but now is almost a daily happening!
BTW - Hope to someday find 6135 free of jamming before 1500, so I can
check on Glenn Hauser's UNID (perhaps Madagascar).
MYANMAR. 5915, Myanmar Radio. Had been very nice recently to have CRI
off the air here, leaving Myanmar in the clear, but Jan 25, CRI returned to
cause heavy QRM 1300+.
PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260, NBC Madang, 1138-1208*, Jan 26. Pop
Pacific Islands songs; DJ in Pidgin; 1202 usual bird call and NBC news
in English till suddenly off.
SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, SIBC. Jan 25, starting at 1257 with only
a carrier (no audio at all) till last check at 1516, during which had periods
of faint audio; very low modulation; playing pop songs; mostly unusable;
greatly extended schedule today (past 1200*).

Re: AIR Gangtok -
Ron Howard Jan 27, 2018 18:35 UTC No.2994 SIKKIM. 4835, AIR Gangtok, 1444-1515, Jan 27. Above theshold
level audio; segment in English 1444-1459, with pop songs; REO
Speedwagon "Keep on Loving You," a Rolling Stones song, etc.;
several clear mentions of "All India Radio"; 1500-1512 non-stop
solo sitar instrumental music; 1512 start of the New Delhi audio
feed (tone, followed by commercial announcements); 1515 news
in Hindi. This past week there were days they were clearly not
broadcasting, while other days had strong hum from their transmitter,
so great to find them doing so well today.
Still a challenge to hear this, but today was one of their best days, as
normally they are well below threshold level audio. Details very similar
to these that Bruce Churchill reported in DXLD 16-36, during the same
time period:
" .... Surprised to hear English program at 1430 to 1459 with woman
announcer intro (滴ello all you beautiful people out there・his is・br>Gangtok・oday we will be talking about・) followed by intro instrumental/
vocal music piece. Talk on women痴 equality in education and society. Pop
vocal/instrumental music selections in between talk segments. Back to
vernacular at 1459.5 with man and local instrumental music. Commercials
at 1512-1515. Intermittent slight CWQRM on 4836. Have logged Sikkim
from this site before but in the Dec/Jan time frame and with QRM from
ABC. From this site Gangtok was one of the predominant carrier indications
on 60 mb." (via remote Perseus site in E. Finland, on Sept 1, 2016).

Ron Howard Feb 02, 2018 05:26 UTC No.3012 BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 1101-1139*, on Jan 31.
Not on the air every day! Monologue in Pidgin and pop songs;
moderate RRI QRM; suddenly cut off.
CHINA. 5050, Beibu Bay Radio. On Feb 1, from 1500 to 1525, with
Chinese and English; American mother talking about how she taught
her kids from an early age to learn Chinese; the movie "Greatest
Showman" being released today across China; sound bites from the
movie along with song from the movie "Never Enough."
Jan 30, BBR, 1505-1525. In Chinese, but playing Bobby Darin - "Mack
the Knife," Frank Sinatra - "Fly Me To The Moon," Ray Charles - "Georgia
On My Mind" and Chubby Checker - "Let's Twist Again"; fair; always ending
this segment with "See you next time."
6035, PBS Yunnan (Voice of Shangri-la), 1143-1200*, Jan 31. In Chinese.
Their normal format is playing a variety of music, not just Chinese songs;
most commonly cuts off at 1201*, as I have often reported. BBS (Bhutan)
on the other hand from 1100 to 1200 is in English and 1130+ normally plays
pop hit songs in English. No BBS heard today.
INDIA. 5010, AIR Thiruvananthapuram // 5040, AIR Jeypore, 1327+,
Feb 1. Again with live coverage of the India vs RSA cricket match from
South Africa; in English and Hindi; mostly fair reception both frequencies.
INDONESIA. 3325, Pro 1 RRI Palangkaraya, 1443+, Jan 30. Paul
McCartney & Stevie Wonder - "Ebony and Ivory," Billy Joel - "Just the
Way You Are," Diana Ross & Lionel Richie - "Endless Love," Stevie
Wonder - "I Just Called To Say I Love You" (unusual segment!); in
Bahasa Indonesia; 1504 "RRI Palangkaraya" SA and ad for iPhone; fair.
Still is the only active Indonesian SW station.
KOREA NORTH/SOUTH. 6250, on Jan 26, at 1229. More diplomacy
in action? No jamming from the north! Sign on of Echo of Unification with
distinctive IS; stronger than Echo of Hope - Voice of Hope. My audio at
http://goo.gl/xAx6SJ . Very nice to finally hear EOU's IS for the first time,
as normally the jamming from the north totally covers it!
KOREA SOUTH. 5920, Voice of Freedom, 1506, Jan 31. Ends their
audio; keeps transmitter on till starting audio again about 1552; strong
carrier. This is their daily format of not turning off transmitter.
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio, 1253, on Wednesday, Jan 31.
Language lesson "Say It In English"; a nervous "Tom" meets his future
in-laws and knocks over a coffee table, etc.; mostly fair.
Also on Jan 31, VOA special English program "Top Technology Stories
of 2017," at 1544; audio streaming and transcript at http://goo.gl/kqKfFF .
A repeat of last Wed. show.

in Pidgin with dedications and playing pop songs; several "NBC
Bougainville" promos; cut off in mid-song; very light RRI QRM.
BTW - NBC Madang (3260) off the air Feb 3 (1059+).
CHINA. 4940, Voice of Strait, 1503,Feb 3. The Saturday only "Focus

jingle; program with audio feed from the CCTV/CNTV "Roof of the World"
episode 4, "Water of Great Good" about the Qinghai Tibet Plateau; 1530
usual ID in English - "This is the Voice of Taiwan Strait News Radio."
Tibet video at http://goo.gl/SzmYfe .

fair. Probably on the weekend they just run repeat shows 1500-1525
FIJI. 558, Radio Fiji One (presumed), 1211-1221, on Feb 3. A rare
day with audio above threshold level; was already Sunday in Suva, so
mostly religious songs with somechatting in language that sounded
right to be Fiji; poor due to the normally strong San Francisco QRM
from 560 (KSFO). My poor quality audio at http://goo.gl/sB62CK

KCBS of each SW band c/off after the end of the broadcast,
but the 819 kHz KCBS doesn't c/off and a mysterious signal is started.

BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 1112-1148, Feb 11,
Sunday. No religious songs here (see PNG - NBC Madang); DJ
in Pidgin/Tok Pisin playing pop songs; Bob Seger - "Old Time

ERITREA. 7140.0, VOBME 1 (presumed), 1528, Feb 12. Nice
to find no jamming here at all; in vernacular with HOA music.
[non-log] 7181.52, VOBME 2, at 1528, Feb 12. Clearly off the air
and no jamming here either.
ETHIOPIA[non]. 11575, Radio OMN (Oromia Media Network),
at 1600, Feb 12. In vernacular with ID; 1603 hit with strong white
noise jamming; almost fair.
[non-log] 11600, Radio OMN, clearly off the air here Feb 12, from
1600+; also no jamming here; 1606 tuned away and still a clear

KOREA SOUTH. 5920, Voice of Freedom, 1612, Feb 12. Very good
reception; no jamming. Four minute audio at http://goo.gl/Bvaqe7 .
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio, 1221-1235, Feb 12. Monday edition

the air; a check at 1132 was back on again; 1150-1202 in Pidgin/Tok Pisin
with Sunday religious music show; 1202-1212* relay of "NBC National

programming.

Reception above the norm; DJ in Pidgin/Tok Pisin playing a mix
of pop Pacific Islands songs and western hits songs (Every Mother's

about next years referendum for independence.
ERITREA. 7140.0, VOBME 1 (presumed), 1428, Feb 13. In the

after being silent yesterday; no jamming at first, but by 1508 heavy
jamming.
INDIA. 5040, AIR Jeypore, 1155, Feb 13. Another day of live coverage

Indonesian SW station.
KOREA SOUTH. 6045, Voice of Freedom, ex: 5920. Feb 13 is
the first day back on this former frequency; 1110 with fair reception;
checked at 1212 to find the usual CNR1, et al. mess; 1506, as usual,
found strong carrier here before they start up their audio again close
to 1600. The jamming was still down on ex: 5920.

Ron Howard Feb 14, 2018 04:49 UTC No.3054 RUSSIA. 5940, Radio Rossii Kamchatka, assume via the Yelizovo transmitter site on
the Kamchatka peninsula; 0240-0300*, Feb 14. Very poor reception, with QRM from what
sounded like IBRA Media, Radio Sadaye Zindagi, via Al Dhabayya; OM & YL chatting
(in Russian?); 0259 music. Positive "Radio Rossii" SAs before and after 0300 time pips,
so I presume this was "Radio Rossii Kamchatka," as it fits their former schedule. The
0300* cut off happened in mid-sentence.

Ron Howard Feb 14, 2018 18:32 UTC No.3059 ETHIOPIA[non]. 11575, Radio OMN (Oromia Media Network),
on Feb 14. Was today a clever ploy to fool the folks jamming from
Ethiopia? If so, it worked! At *1600, instead of Radio OMN
programming, the jammers in Ethiopia instead heard Dr. Terry
Alan Cooper, a forensic psychologist, being interviewed in
English, about solitary confinement. So the jammers must have
assumed Radio OMN was not on today and left, whereas later
(by 1609), Radio OMN had in fact started up; in vernacular with
many SAs; fair. No jamming heard at all, up till I tuned away at
1618.

Ron Howard Feb 18, 2018 04:31 UTC No.3073 AUSTRALIA. 5055, Radio 4KZ, on Feb 17 (Saturday), at 1107 with
Lulu - "To Sir With Love"; at 1112 with Cliff Richard - "We Don't Talk
Anymore"; noted many breaks for ads and seemed like station promos;
almost readable. The problem for me today was with improved signal
from Australia, I also had stronger than usual QRM from China (BBR)
on 5050, even in USB.
A new weekend schedule? Checking today (Feb 17), at 1255+, found
them off the air. Weekdays had recently noted 1405*, within a minute
or two either way.
CHINA. 4900 // 4940, Voice of Strait, 1302, Feb 16. Live annual coverage
of the Chinese New Year's Eve (Spring Festival) Gala; CCTV audio feed,
with comedy skits, musical selections, etc., from Beijing. The start of China's
most important holiday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeRi86DcfyA ,
video of gala starts about 37:30.
Checked almost all the Chinese SW stations for this gala coverage, but only
found these two VOS frequencies carrying it. A disappointment to me, as in
past years I enjoyed the gala on a wide variety of stations.
RUSSIA. 5940.0, Radio Rossii Kamchatka, heard again Feb 15 (Thursday).
0245-0248 & 0256 till end of audio at 0259, with musical segments; 0300-0303
with test tone going on and off till transmitter off at 0303. A different format
than I heard Feb 13, as tonight there was no ID nor time pips; seemed to
be in Russian; some QRM from Radio Sadaye Zindagi.
Conforming to their schedule of being off the air on the weekend, observed
no signal from Kamchatka, Saturday (Feb 17). Noted on 5940.0, from 0238
till cut off at 0259*, with assume IBRA Media, Radio Sadaye Zindagi, via Al
Dhabayya; language and music sounded correct to be them; some QRM
from Brazil on the low side.
ZAMBIA. 5915, ZNBC/Radio One, 0418, Feb 15. Nice "GOtv, live it, love it"
promo in English and vernacular. Always love hearing these ads in English!

1559; briefly on at 1600, then cut off, but came back on again;
seemed to be in German, local language and English; "Hello. This
is Radio ヨrang, the freedom voice of ヨrang," "this hour for
New York ヨrang inhabitants"; interview with a couple married 52
years; "4 o'clock pm. It's very cold. We are interviewing the young
landlord"; several spots with just the sound of seagulls or
with announcers talking over the sound of seagulls; some audio hum.
Their annual program.
My audio of mostly English posted at

SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, SIBC, on Feb 21, noted with pop songs at
1239; low modulation, but much better than the recent plain carrier that has
been heard; 1245*, so well past their normal 1200*.

BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, Feb 22, from 1105
to 1140, with talks in Pidgin; many mentions of "the people of
Bougainville," "leadership of Bougainville," "Prime Minister,"
"referendum," "Papua New Guinea," etc; 1140-1200 DJ in Pidgin
with music show; 1200 news and "NBC Radio" promos till 1207*
cut off.
Certainly this station is going all out to provide the citizens with
the necessary info to make an informed vote next year for the
Bougainville referendum to decide on independence. Now being
heard almost daily with segments dealing with the referendum,
either in English or Pidgin.
CHINA. 4940, Voice of Strait. For several years now, I have found
it fairly common during the annual Spring (lunar new year) Festival
to find some Chinese SW stations with anomalies. During the long
holiday, many Chinese are off from work and like to travel, so unusual
things sometimes happen on SW.
Feb 24 (Saturday), would normally have the "Focus on China" English
program 1500-1530, but not so today; tuned in at 1438 to hear the audio
feed from the CCTV production about the Qinghai Tibet Plateau in English;
audio feed ended at 1455 and into just Chinese, so not the normal exit
English format for "Focus on China." Will probably be back to normal in
a few weeks time. Today 1500+ with Chinese music show.
BTW - Feb 24, found 1200-1300 not // for 4900 & 4940, as I had recently
heard VOS.
ETHIOPIA [non]. 11575, Radio OMN (Oromia Media Network). Feb 23
(Friday), heard the transmitter turned on at 1555; programming in vernacular
started at ToH; tuned away at 1610 and there was still no jamming at all;
fair-good reception. 11600 silent and didn't note what was happening on
11595, which was heard Feb 24 by Glenn Hauser, et al., as probably the
new // frequency (ex: 11600).
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio, 1538, Feb 24 (Saturday). Segment
in English; "This is Myanmar Radio. Now you can hear the weather";
children singing "Let there be Peace on Earth"; 1543-1553 the usual
Sat program "Voice of ASEAN," telling some of the history of ASEAN
and of their various conferences held in ASEAN countries; played pop
songs (Fleetwood Mac - "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow," etc.).
Found the following info on-line, with very positive comments about the
use of radio (my emphasis):
"This new ASEAN in Action (AiA) spin-off project aims to sustain as well as
strengthen the knowledge of ASEAN in the target areas. It is the re-branding
of the twenty year old AiA radio project produced and broadcast by the radio
station of all the ASEAN Member States (AMS) but with enhanced features.
Taking into consideration that radio is the most efficient media, it has a
strategic and vast potential in helping the overall development of each
of the AMS. Thus, by means of combining traditional and new media in
enhancing the project, radio can play a more active and constructive role
in promoting the goals of ASEAN and continue promoting greater
awareness and understanding among the people of ASEAN and beyond.
Entitled 天oice of ASEAN ・Beyond Boundaries・(VoA-BB), this spin-off
project will comprise the annual production of one infotainment radio
programme each by all ten ASEAN member states (AMS) of 15 ・30
minute duration focusing on the 18 ・30 year age group for broadcast
first in its own country then exchanged for broadcast in the other AMS to
enhance awareness about ASEAN among ASEAN citizens and beyond
ASEAN boundaries. Radio is again the chosen medium of this project
because it is still generally considered fast, cheap and easily accessible
mean to disseminate information to the people."

silent today and yesterday). More thunderstorms in Queensland?
Ozy Radio, Feb 27, not on 4835, nor 5045; at 1146 and both still silent

BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 1129-1154*, Feb 26.
Usual DJ in Pidgin playing Pacific Islands songs; no special programs
about the earthquake; suddenly cut off. NBC Madang (3260) also on
the air.
Feb 28, NBC Bougainville, from 1126-1207*. DJ with pop Pacific Islands

no sign of BBS/Bhutan.

// AIR Thiruvananthapuram (5010).
KOREA SOUTH. 4885, Echo of Hope - VOH, 1252 & 1302, Feb 28.
Brief anomaly with them being off the air, but at 1328 check noted on
the air; rare that they are silent; always heard with fair-good reception
and never any N. Korea jamming.
5857.5, HLL2 Seoul, 1307, Feb 26. In English with weather conditions at
different observatories; providing wind direction, wind speed in meters per
second, air pressure in hectopascals and temperature in Celsius; as usual
the audio sounded muffled, but good signal strength. My audio posted at
http://goo.gl/YtG7Yr .
6015, KBS Hanminjok Bangsong 1, on Feb 27, at 1210, heard with
about a half an hour with no N. Korea jamming; news in Korean;
nice "KBS News" SAs in English after each news item; sound bites
in English; good reception. My audio at http://goo.gl/VUDaxm .
MYANMAR. 5985, Myanmar Radio. The Wednesday (Feb 28) edition of

ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS. 4760, AIR Port Blair
(presumed not to be AIR Leh [Kashmir]). March 1, from 1211
to 1254, with above threshold level audio; this qualifies as a
rare reception for me; subcontinent music/singing; assume
in Hindi; QRM as usual from strong CODAR. My music audio
at http://goo.gl/fLdQr1 .
AUSTRALIA. March 1 heard:
5055 (4KZ), at 1112 & 1254, but later at 1306 was clearly off the air;
so another abbreviated broadcast. Thunderstorms in the area?
5045 (Ozy Radio), not heard March 1, nor was anything on 4835 (AIR
Gangtok also again silent today). Both low powered Aussie stations
recently on the air rather erratically.
BOUGAINVILLE. 3325, NBC Bougainville, 1120-1201*, March 1. DJ
in Pidgin playing Pacific Islands pop songs.
NBC Madang (3260) not broadcasting March 1, at the same time period.
CHINA. 6115 & 9505, Voice of Strait. Another anomaly or a possible
schedule change? Heard March 1, at 1204 & 1257. Normally, as recently
observed, they would have switched to 4900 & 4940 at about 1200, but
not today. Heard 4900 with *1304, while 4940 was already on at 1303.
Needs more monitoring to determine if this is a real time change of
switching frequencies one hour later.
KOREA SOUTH. 7275, KBS World Radio, 1258, March 1. IS and ID in
Korean; into program in Chinese; QRM from UNID Chinese station.
