[xHE-AAC] ** Extended High-Efficiency AAC audio codec
*** This transmission seems to have been a test and has NOT been TX recently. (JUly 19, 2020)
Recently, a new type of DRM broadcast has been sent from China. The codec called "xHE-AAC"
is used for that, and demodulation is difficult unless special software is used.
The new type of DRM broadcast still seems to be testing, playing nonstop Chinese music.
And the frequency is changed according to time. (Irregular)

Question: On July 28, on 5985 kHz., at 1207 UT, noted what sounded like a DRM signal or perhaps a jamming noise?
Was totally blocking Myanmar Radio reception.

This is the music I heard on 15440 kHz DRM via a remote receiver in China. China usually has CNR1 on
its DRM channels. Does anyone heard this type of music before from China?

In DRM test broadcasts in China, non-stop music was sometimes played except for CNR-1 (Voice of China) programs.

ZQ.fan, who lives in China, is reporting that these tests are from Kunming and that the target is Oceania. To my knowledge, this is the first
time China has targeted a region other than China for DRM transmissions.

Based on it being targeted for Oceania, I tried some receivers in this direction. Heard via a Kiwi located
in Perth, WA with a decent signal with some drop outs. 100% copy via a Kiwi in the Philippines. Both
logs at about 0830.

17790 kHz went off at 0900 UTC, moved to 12000 kHz, which is a difficult frequency as CRI is in analog
with Chinese on 12005 kHz (ironically, this is from Kunming as well.)
Lots of antenna choices a KUN, looks like 135 azimuth if targeting Oceania. Not sure of power though,
Chinese DRM is typically listed at 30 kW.
DOF had been in use on 11695 kHz, this has gone missing. When this transmissions started, I thought
they were from DOF based on this, but DOF does not appear to have an antenna for Oceania. They had
a total of two transmissions at DOF, now it is one. KUN use to have one, now they have two. So perhaps
KUN has some additional DRM equipment or it has been moved from DOF.

Sue Wei (with CRI) just tweeted that the tests from Kunming are not international in nature.
So target is China rather than Oceania.
So we have different sources saying different things.

Their test broadcast using the xHE-AAC codec continues today. As a result of trying
reception with SDR etc. in various places, the signal strength in the Oceania direction
is strong. There is no doubt from the frequency used.
All frequencies are strong from the west. The test broadcast time is mainly 0100-1200.
Kunming may be the transmitting station that does not broadcast overseas for this time.
